The actor quickly went to her defense, asking his fans to “respectfully stop.” Entertainment Weekly reported in March 2016 that Hunnam asked his fans to quit harassing his girlfriend online. According to Hunnam, the couple have been together for about a dozen years, long before his fame. “It has been brought to my attention that there is a group of immature girls posting a large number of hard messages aimed at my long-time girlfriend,” he wrote on a Facebook fan page at the time. He asked fans to stop and added, “She is an intelligent, beautiful, kind person, who just tried to live a simple life and has nothing to do with the entertainment industry.” He continued to say that he is confused by the negative and unprovoked attacks from people who “call themselves my fans.”

I received a letter from her, and I realized that from the tone of it and things she was saying that she hadn’t received the two letters that I sent before,” said Hunnam. He made up for it, though, with emeralds for his lady, no less! “I had the benefit of shooting in Colombia, where they have rather lovely and somewhat cheap emeralds,” Hunnam admitted. “My girlfriend is a jewelry designer, so I was able to come back with an appropriately sized gift. It didn’t remedy all of the trouble I was in, but it got me halfway there,” he quipped.

When Hunnam first accepted his role as Christian Grey (before Jamie Dornan landed it), he told Hollywoodlife.com that his girlfriend was always “part of the decision-making process,” whenever he chooses a role.
