Becky G is celebrating her 20th birthday today. Judging from her tweets, we think it’s safe to say that she’s very excited about her birthday! The star also has a new album and a new movie coming out soon.

Pint-sized pop princess, Becky G turns 20 today (March 2), and she’s got a great year ahead of her. Besides gearing up for the new Power Rangers movie, she’s recording a new album and promoting her Spanish debut single. She’s definitely got a lot in store for 2017. At midnight, she posted a picture on Instagram and Twitter of her 20th birthday balloons. We thought there’s no better way to celebrate her birthday than to compile a Becky G wiki and share it with you!

#1. Her Childhood was Full of Struggles

Becky G was born Rebbeca Gomez in Inglewood California. Her parents, Alejandra and Francisco “Frank” Gomez, are of Mexican descent. She has two brothers, Frankie and Alex, and a younger sister named Stephanie.

Becky’s family lived in poverty and her parents couldn’t afford the mortgage on their home. At the age of nine, she and her family were forced to move into her grandparent’s converted garage. She worked part-time jobs doing commercials and voice-over work at a young age. Though she once attended public school, Becky G was homeschooled after she was bullied. She claimed that she was a frequent target by multiple girls, due to her jobs in the entertainment industry.

Now, at 20 years old, Becky and her family are no longer financially strapped. Her success as a singer and actress is on the rise, and she signed a modeling contract with Covergirl, making her worries for money a thing of the past. In a career span of five years, she has already amassed a net worth of $1.0 million!

Goodbye 19. Hi 20.

#2. Her “Mid-Life Crisis” Pushed Her to Music

How can someone who just turned 20 years old have a mid-life crisis? Becky G had a mid-life crisis at the age of nine. In her words, “That was literally my mid-life crisis when I was nine years old. That’s when I felt like, “OK, I gotta get my life together. What am I gonna do?” she told Rolling Stone, “I was like, ‘I’m gonna entertain the whole world, why not?’ So I sat down with my parents, and I said, ‘Give me six months, and we can get me an agent and a manager.'”

She was part of the girl groups, GLAM and BCG. During this time, Becky began writing her own songs, recording herself and posting covers of popular songs on her YouTube channel. Her cover video of “Otis” by Kanye West and Jay-Z caught the attention of Dr Luke, a producer who has worked with the likes of Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus, and of course, Kesha. (Yes, that Dr. Luke.)

Dr. Luke scheduled a meeting with Becky and signed her to his label, Kemosabe Records. He said in an interview that he would’ve signed her based on the “Otis” video alone, but at that meeting he learned she could write her own songs, too. “I would have signed her off that video alone. I was 100 percent in.” He added, “She has so much personality and her voice just pops out of the speakers. Then I met her and discovered she could also sing and play the guitar and I thought, ‘This is even better.’ Then I found out she could write and it was like, ‘What else are you going to tell me, that you’re also Van Gogh?’ Her potential is limitless.”

#3. Her Debut Single was Featured in Hotel Transylvania

While she worked on her debut album with Dr. Luke, Becky G released her first single, “Problem” and followed it up with “Problem (The Monster Remix),” which was featured in the blockbuster animated movie, Hotel Transylvania. She was also a featured artist on Cody Simpson, Cher Lloyd, and Michel Telo’s songs.

In 2013, this up-and-coming artist caught everyone’s attention with her single “Becky from the Block,” which heavily samples Jennifer Lopez’s iconic track, “Jenny from the Block.” The music video for Becky’s song was filmed in the teen’s neighborhood with a cameo from J-Lo herself! She also filmed the music video for her song, “Built for This,” which she directed. Becky released a few promotional singles prior to her debut album, worked in a few short movies, and made appearances on TV shows as herself.

#4. She Dated Austin Mahone

Becky G was dating another rising teen star, Austin Mahone back in 2015. Just when we thought they would be the next Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, they broke up after only five months of dating. The celebrity life took its toll on their relationship as Becky revealed in a magazine interview saying, “I was with someone who was really amazing and inspiring, and everything was right about us except the timing. We had so many dreams and aspirations before we started dating and you can’t forget those. Honestly, it sucked really bad, but he’s so awesome and there’s no bad blood.”

But now, it looks like the timing for a relationship is right for Becky! She’s now dating Sebastian Lletget, a soccer hunk who plays midfield for LA Galaxy. A source close to Becky revealed that Becky’s mom approves of Lletget for her daughter. Looking at this swoon-worthy athlete, we approve too!
