Who Is Inky Johnson?

Born on February 12, 1986 in Atlanta, Georgia, Inquoris “Inky” Johnson’s age is 32 years old. At the time of his birth, his mother was 16 years old and Johnson didn’t know who his father was for a very long time.

Inky Johnson lived with his grandparents in Kirkwood, Atlanta with 13 other family members in a small two-bedroom home.

The drugs and violence in the neighborhood were always surrounding Johnson, and his family had moved five times in nine years. Those tough days only made him stronger, and he stuck to his roots.

While Johnson slept on a pallet in his home pondering life, no one could predict the hardships he would go through.

With his immense passion for football, Johnson had dreamed of becoming a sportsman in the NFL someday. And when he told his father, Johnson said he had his full support.

Johnson went on to attend the University of Tennessee, where he played as a cornerback on the school’s football team.

Wearing a No.29 jersey (which was special to Johnson), he played against the Gamecocks in 2006 as a defensive back. He did such a good job that the college’s football coach chose him as the team’s captain.

Johnson graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and earned a Master of Science in Sports Psychology in 2009.

Inky Johnson’s Arm Injury Crushed His Football Career

Inky Johnson was on the field in 2006 playing against the Air Force Academy. It was well into the game when he went for a tackle and rammed his right shoulder into Justin Handley, the other team’s running back.

Johnson was on the ground when the coach saw that his eyes were drooping, which is a sign of nerve damage. He said that he felt paralyzed after he fell to the ground and blacked out.

When he opened his eyes, his teammates were hovering over him and asked him if he was okay and could still play. But he couldn’t move and was left senseless.

Johnson was immediately taken to the hospital, where the doctors told him they had some bad news. After many tests and MRI scans, Johnson was told that he had severely damaged his right arm, as the nerves were all torn.

They told him he couldn’t play anymore because his arm would never be the same again. They gave him some challenging surgery options, where he had to decide which body part to take the nerves from to attach to his right arm.

Whichever he chose, he would be left with a weak body part along with his damaged and weak right arm. Johnson went to the doctors the next day and told them that he had decided against having the transplant.

Now, Johnson lives with a paralyzed arm. But even though Inky Johnson’s NFL dream on the football field came to an end, it was the start of a new journey for him that required much courage and faith.

He Didn’t Give Up!

After hearing the news that he wasn’t going to play anymore, Inky Johnson retired from football even before he could see success. He decided he needed to turn his life around and for good.

He came to realize the bigger things life, like the fact that he was still alive and able to help others. So, Johnson decided to become a motivational speaker and also wrote an autobiography.

Inky Johnson’s book, Inky: An Amazing Story of Faith and Perseverance, talks about his journey from poverty to playing football and then facing life’s dire consequences.

Johnson now mentors young underprivileged kids in Atlanta by speaking about his journey and faith in life. He gives many inspirational speeches and is now known for his motivational spirit.

The 32-year-old makes sure to send text messages every day to his team members, wishing them luck and reminding them about faith and trust.
