Discovery Channel’s Alaskan Bush People can be more dramatic than The Bold and the Beautiful and Keeping Up with the Kardashians combined. The show took a dramatic turn recently with matriarch Ami Brown’s cancer. But fans are wondering about another member of the Brown family. What happened to Matt Brown? He was MIA for a good few episodes because of an off-camera scare. Where is Matt Brown now? Here’s what you need to know.

What Happened to Matt Brown on Alaskan Bush People?

If you’ve been following the not so run-of-the-mill Brown family on Alaskan Bush People, you might be aware that matriarch, Ami Brown has been diagnosed with lung cancer, and her chances of survival don’t look so good. Her eldest son, Matt took the news the hardest, but he wasn’t there on the show when she was seeking treatment.

Ami and Billy Brown, with the rest of their clan, travel to Southern California where she’s getting treatment for her cancer. While the entire brood are with Ami, Matt stayed back in their homestead in rural Alaska.

While he was alone and the camera crew packed up and left for the day, Matt had a terrifying accident which left him severely injured. When the crew returns, they find him bleeding from the head.

“This is bad, man. He doesn’t look good. Safety, prep for an evac[uation,]” says a production member on an earlier episode of ABP. Matt was heard yelling “Oh my God!” while medics on-site suspect a skull fracture. While he’s carried away in an ambulance, he finds it in himself to joke, “I lost a little bit of blood, didn’t I?”

It was later revealed that Matt was injured when an improvised bear deterrent exploded. He reportedly filled a mason jar with gunpowder and canon fuse and stored it in the refrigerator of his apartment in Hoonah. The mason jar exploded and sent the refrigerator door flying off its hinges, hitting Matt’s head.

He was airlifted to a hospital in Juneau where doctors had to use nine staples to close the gaping wound. He was placed in intensive care before he was released a few days later.

Meanwhile, the family was worried sick about Matt in California. “The bears were really bad. I just got overly paranoid in the situation and took it a little too far,” he tells his brother, Bam Brown, who retorts that he got “a little too zealous” with the gun powder but said, “You survived and that’s the important part.”

Matt is likely on the mend since his accident and has been absent from filming. The show focused on Ami Brown’s recovery and rebuilding their new home in the Alaskan wilderness.

The Brown family celebrated the holidays with a surprise for Ami. The Alaskan Bush People Christmas special aired on December 15.
