A lot of stars promoted the Time’s Up movement at the 2018 Golden Globes. What is Time’s Up? Keep reading for all the details, right here.

What is the Time’s Up Movement?

The movement started as a way to stand up against sexual harassment after several women in Hollywood came forward to accuse producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault.

The movement was started by many female writers, directors, actors, and agents as a way to stand up against sexual misconduct across the country. Some of its members include Eva Longoria, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Rashida Jones, Kerry Washington, Ashley Judd, Reese Witherspoon, and America Ferrera.

It was in November 2017 that the Alianza Nacional de Campesinas—an organization comprised of women who work, worked, or come from farmworker families— penned a letter to these women, showing support and solidarity against sexual abuse. The letter was published in Time, explaining experiences of harassment and assault among 700,000 female farmworkers across the U.S.

What Does the Letter Say?

A portion of the letter reads, “Even though we work in very different environments, we share a common experience of being preyed upon by individuals who have the power to hire, fire, blacklist and otherwise threaten our economic, physical and emotional security. Like you, there are few positions available to us and reporting any kind of harm or injustice committed against us doesn’t seem like a viable option. Complaining about anything — even sexual harassment — seems unthinkable because too much is at risk, including the ability to feed our families and preserve our reputations. … In these moments of despair, and as you cope with scrutiny and criticism because you have bravely chosen to speak out against the harrowing acts that were committed against you, please know that you’re not alone. We believe and stand with you.”

The Aftermath

On January 1, 2018, The New York Times reported on the Time’s Up movement, revealing that they support the millions of women around the world, who come out and speak about their experience with sexual harassment.

It works to help them with:

In support of the Time’s Up movement, many stars showed up at the 2018 Golden Globes wearing black to support their message:“No more silence. No more waiting. No more tolerance for discrimination, harassment or abuse.”

The movement’s mission is to have “a unified call for change from women in entertainment for women everywhere. From movie sets to farm fields to boardrooms alike, we envision nationwide leadership that reflects the world in which we live.”

What Are the Time’s Up Pins?

Along with their dark ensembles, many stars like Ewan McGregor, William H. Macy, Nick Jonas, Ryan Seacrest, and Justin Timberlake wore black and white Time’s Up pins to show support and solidarity against injustice.

Reese Witherspoon reportedly came up with the idea to have pins. Stylist Arianne Phillips said, “Reese asked me to come to the actors’ group, and told me they were going to be wearing black and would I consider creating a pin for the nominees and male presenters. I met so many great women, and it was such an honor to be called to action.”
