Although it has been 22 years since Selena Quintanilla’s death, people have still not forgotten the celebrated singer. To celebrate the legacy of the late star, Google Doodle is paying tribute to Selena. Keep reading if you want to know why Yolanda Saldívar killed Selena.

Who Killed Selena?

Yolanda Saldívar is the alleged killer of Selena. She was born on September 19, 1960, in San Antonio, Texas.

Saldívar is the youngest of seven kids born to Juanita and Frank Saldívar. Her father was a head waiter at a Mexican restaurant.

Saldívar completed her high school education in 1979 from McCollum High School and attended Palo Alto College to become a registered nurse. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1990 and started working as a graduate nurse at Medical Center Hospital.

In 1991, Saldívar was granted her registered nurse license from the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. She had to work part-time after she adopted three kids, which included her niece. Saldívar never got married.

Why Did Yolanda Saldívar Kill Selena?

Saldívar was working hard as a nurse in hospitals. During this time, she started listening to Tejano music and became a big fan. In fact, she even went to a lot of concerts.

Since she was so fond of Tejano music, she wanted to start a fan club. Initially, she didn’t like Selena because she felt that Selena influenced the Tejano Music Awards. However, her friends persuaded her to approach Selena.

After Saldívar attended one of Selena’s concerts, she kept calling Selena’s father to start a fan club in San Antonio. Selena’s father eventually agreed to Saldívar’s request and made her the club’s President.

Later, Saldívar became the manager of Selena’s clothing stores. Over a short period, Selena’s fan club became one of the largest in the San Antonio area.

In 1995, Selena’s family learned that Saldívar was reportedly stealing money from the boutiques and the fan club. So they decided to fire her, but Saldívar refused to turn over the financial records of the store and the club. To obtain those records, Selena met Saldívar at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi.

Saldívar again refused to give Selena the documents claiming that she was raped in Mexico. Selena drove her to the hospital, but the doctors did not find any evidence of sexual assault.

After they went back to the motel, Selena again asked her to give the papers. Saldívar then removed a .38 Taurus Model 85 revolver from her bag and aimed at Selena. She tried to run, but, unfortunately, Saldívar shot Selena in the back and severed her artery.

Selena somehow made it to the lobby, and the clerk called 911 for help. But, due to the loss of blood, Selena succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

Saldívar’s trial went on for few months. But the jury eventually found her guilty of first-degree murder.

For a very long time, there were rumors that Saldívar’s was found dead in her prison cell.

The rumor stated, “Yolanda Saldivar was found dead in her cell by deputies during a routine walk through of the Mountain View unit in Gatesville, Texas. Attempts to resuscitate Saldivar proved futile as she appeared to have been dead for several hours before discovery. Cause of death will be announced pending autopsy and toxicology reports.”

However, the rumors were put to rest by Jason Clark, who confirmed that Saldívar was alive. This wasn’t the only time hoax news about Saldívar circulated on the Internet.

Where Is Yolanda Saldívar Now?

On October 26, 1995, Saldívar was sentenced to prison for the murder of Selena. A month later, she was taken to the Gatesville Unit, which is now known as the Christina Melton Crain Unit in Gatesville, Texas.
