Canadian singer Celine Dion got a lot of heat when she married René Angélil in 1994—not only had he been her manager since she was 12 years old, but he was also 26 years older than she was. Despite their age difference, the celebrity couple always came across as being perfectly happy together, even after struggling to conceive children naturally.
However, Dion recently revealed that her marriage to an older man hasn’t always been easy. The pressure of being married to one another while also working so closely together on shows, tours, and traveling put a serious strain on the relationship. According to Dion, the problem was communication, and it wasn’t until she turned to a close friend a few years ago that she and Angélil were able to power through their marriage problems. “I was old school and kept it hidden. Forget about it, and it will go away,” said Dion. “I talked about it with my best girlfriend, and she taught me it never goes away. It sits there and gets worse. She taught me how to say things the right way.”
Dion recalls that she tried to learn how to better relate to her husband, which might seem difficult when there is such a stark age difference. But the singer found that after simply opening up to each other and talking more, their marriage became infinitely healthier. She offers some valuable advice for other struggling couples, based on her experience: “We laugh. We joke. We kid each other. We want our marriage to last forever. Talk over everything and you’ll find you are still on the honeymoon. It’s the secret.”
What do you think: Do you agree with Celine Dion’s advice about communication being the secret to a happy marriage, even when it’s a May-December relationship?
