Age-gap relationships are no easy feat—they require time, patience, and commitment if they’re ever going to work. It doesn’t make it any easier when you’re both busy movie stars who are always in the public eye. But after 13 years of marriage and two kids, actors Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas are stronger than ever, despite their 25-year age difference. The two have stood by each other in sickness and in health, and have always been open about their struggles, like Douglas’ advanced throat cancer diagnosis and Zeta-Jones’ struggle with bipolar disorder.
When recently asked about how their marriage has endured so much over the years, Zeta-Jones revealed their secret, and it’s really very simple—they give each other space. “Respect, space and a sense of humor. We spend a hell of a lot of time together, so we are careful to maintain our space,” said the actress. She admitted that she often spends time on her own, hiding out in a room of their house, but it’s that time apart that has strengthened their marriage.
Zeta-Jones also touched on their age difference, revealing that it hasn’t had as much of an impact on their relationship as people usually think. “Given the age difference, what’s remarkable is that we are so similar in so many ways. We have a laid-back, easy-going relationship.”
What do you think: Do you agree with Zeta-Jones’ advice or do you think time apart is risky for a May-December relationship? Do you have any relationship advice of your own?
