Who is Rhaegar Targaryen? Who is Jon Snow’s father? Who is Jon Snow’s mother? Who are the Jon Snow parents? So many questions to the labyrinth that is the Game of Thrones plot, but after the season 6 finale, fans finally have the answer they always suspected but never had confirmed. The Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark (R+L=J) theory is true, making the answer to the “Jon Snow father” search term Rhaegar Targaryen. Now, when fans search for “Rhaegar Targaryen son,” they will happily get Jon Snow or Jon Targaryen? Now that we know Snow’s true parentage, here’s what we know about the deceased prince/father.

After watching the epic and thrilling episode of Game of Thrones last night, fans have long waited for the ultimate reveal of Jon Snow’s parents and whether he has a true claim to the Iron Throne. And after last night’s revelation, which takes us back to the Tower of Joy, we see a much younger and alive Ned Stark, who brought a small group of warriors to rescue his sister from the tower. After successfully killing the men in a bloody battle, Ned goes up to the tower to find that his sister is near death in bed after childbirth. He appeared saddened over seeing his sister and the state she was in, and a secret is whispered in his ear before she dies. We then see a maid (who was in the room with Lyanna) give Ned a baby. The camera then fades to a present-day Jon Snow and all is revealed!

R+L=J Theory

The standing theory is that Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark were believed to be the parents of Jon Snow and so far that much is true, making Snow part of the Targaryen family tree. But fans are still left unsure as to the nature of how Lyanna ended up in the Tower of Joy. Was she abducted or did she elope? Fans are left in the dark as to the definite answer, but judging by the nature of the show and its obvious dark tone, it has been highly hypothesized that Lyanna was taken against her will.

Who Is Rhaegar Targaryen?

Rhaegar has never been seen in the show, but he was the eldest prince of Aerys II of the House of Targaryen (who was married to his wife, Queen Elia). Queen Elia was later murdered with her children by The Mountain. Queen Mother, Cersei, described him as a beautiful man and was supposed to marry him but the union was denied. Rhaegar gave Lyanna a flower during the tournament of Harrenhal, knowing that she was betrothed to Robert. He didn’t seem to care that he was already married himself but was infatuated with Lyanna for some unknown reason. Later on, Robert led a rebellion against him and killed Rhaegar with one blow of his hammer, striking his armor so hard that the embedded rubies flew off and end up underwater, which was later called the “Ruby Ford.” Hopefully, the reason behind the abduction will be revealed to fans in season 7, but until then, fans can rest easy knowing who Snow’s parents are.
