With I, Tonya up for several awards this year, the focus is back on the biggest scandal to rock the ‘90s. Disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding’s ex-husband became one of America’s most hated. So, where is Jeff Gillooly now? Keep reading to get the scoop on Jeff Gillooly in 2018.

Since the premiere of I, Tonya, the most jaw-dropping scandal of the sports world from two decades ago is back in the spotlight. Young viewers of I, Tonya might believe that everything in the movie is true, but they could never fathom how Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly became the most hated people of the ‘90s.

Jeff Gillooly and his thugs did the dirty job of kneecapping Nancy Kerrigan. And now, Tonya Harding has returned to the spotlight since the release of the movie, but where is Jeff Gillooly today? We’ve got the details in Jeff Gillooly’s wiki here.

Rise to Infamy

In January 1994, Nancy Kerrigan was clubbed on her leg after a practice session at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit by an assailant later identified as Shane Stant. It was later revealed that Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, and her bodyguard, Shawn Eckhardt, were the masterminds who hired Stant to render Kerrigan incapable of competing at the 1994 Olympics.

Tonya Harding married Jeff Gillooly when she was 19 and divorced him in 1993, a year before the attack. Harding has recently talked about her difficult childhood and being abused by her mother and Gillooly.

Harding claimed that she didn’t have anything to do with the attack. But when Jeff Gillooly told the FBI about her involvement and the mounting evidence to contradict her claims, Harding’s figure skating career was effectively over.

The Plot Thickens

Gillooly accepted a plea deal in exchange for testifying against Harding. Jeff, Stant, Eckhardt, and their getaway driver, Derrick Smith, spent time in the slammer for the attack. Harding was banned from the sport for life while Nancy Kerrigan went on to enjoy fame and fortune.

Things got murkier years later when Harding published her autobiography, The Tonya Tapes, in 2008. In the book, she claims that she wanted to speak to the FBI about Gillooly conspiring with the other men. But she didn’t go ahead with it when Gillooly allegedly threatened to kill her if she did.

To this day, Harding maintains her innocence, although she did plead guilty to hindering the investigation. In her book, she alleges that Gillooly not only threatened her to silence but also raped her along with two unknown men at gunpoint. Gillooly, after serving his prison sentence, denied the rape claims.

Since the release of I, Tonya and her reappearance in the media, Harding has claimed that she did have an inkling about the attack. She claims she never knew nor agreed to Gillooly’s plan.

“I did, however, overhear them talking about stuff,” Harding confessed, “Where, ‘Well, maybe we should take somebody out so we can make sure she gets on the team.’ And I remember telling them, I go, ‘What the hell are you talking about? I can skate.’”

Slipping into Oblivion

Since the dramatic event that shook the sports world, Tonya Harding has popped up now and then to retell her story. However, Gillooly and Kerrigan’s other attackers have opted to stay away from the frenzy and put the episode behind them.

Gillooly shaved off his trademark mustache. And after his release, he legally changed his name to Jeff Stone.

In 2013, Deadspin traced his whereabouts for the first time in years. At the time, he had settled in a small Oregon town where he grew up. He has been married three times since his release.

Gillooly had married a woman named Nancy Sharkey. They met in 1991 when she gave him a manicure and had visited him throughout his prison stay. They had two children, Haley and Noah, before they separated in 2000.

Sharkey, a drug addict, committed suicide five years after their split. Gillooly is currently married to Christy Novasio.

Since his prison stint, Gillooly has had many more legal troubles unrelated to the attack. He has declared bankruptcy and has been sued several times.

Gillooly’s ex-wife filed a restraining order against him, and he, in turn, filed a restraining order against his ex-wife. He was also arrested for assault, DUI, and driving with a suspended license.

Although he’s used to being dogged by the media, Gillooly rarely gives interviews. The last we heard of him in 2018 was through Sebastian Stan who plays him in I, Tonya.

Sebastian Stan said that Jeff Gillooly wrote to him saying, “You might have actually made that mustache look cool for once.”
