Not so surprisingly, Tom Cruise’s parenting skills have been called into question courtesy of a celebrity tabloid that accused the 50-year-old actor of “abandoning” his seven-year-old daughter, Suri, since his marriage dramatically ended with her mother, 34-year-old Katie Holmes.
The recent claims forced Cruise to defend his reputation as a father and he’s going as far as suing the publisher for a whopping $50.0 million. “I have in no way cut Suri out of my life—whether physically, emotionally, financially or otherwise,” he stated in the legal papers. He also added that, although Holmes has primary custody, he and his daughter have a “wonderful relationship” and are still very close, even with his work schedule often taking him overseas.
Interestingly, Cruise wrote in the documents that he has been in frequent contact with “Suri’s mother” via e-mail. However, throughout the document, Cruise reportedly never mentions Holmes by name, only referring to her as either Suri’s mother or his ex-wife, which suggests that there may still be some hard feelings between the former celebrity couple.
It’s hard to know for sure what their relationship has become, especially since Cruise has only spoken once about the famous demise of their May-December marriage—Holmes stunned everyone in 2012 when she unexpectedly filed for divorce from Cruise because of his devotion to the Church of Scientology. “I didn’t expect it,” Cruise said in an interview after their marriage ended. “To be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have a grip on everything, and then it hits you—this is it, what life can do to you.”
What do you think: Can a divorced couple still co-parent successfully?
