It was Stephen Colbert’s birthday last Friday, May 13, and to celebrate, we’ve come up with all the things that make the talk show host rich.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is, for starters, his main source of income which helps bring Stephen Colbert’s net worth to 45.0 million!

Early Life

Colbert was born in Washington D.C., the youngest of 11 children. His father, James William Colbert, Jr., was a doctor, and his mother, Lorna Elizabeth Colbert was a homemaker. Colbert was interested in acting and went to Northwestern University as a theater major to study performance. After graduating in 1986, his first job was selling tickets and souvenirs at Second City’s box office. He was then hired to perform with Second City’s touring company with the guidance of Steve Carrell. After leaving The Second City, he moved to New York and debuted his first sketch comedy show, Exit 57, on Comedy Central in 1995. To make extra money, he produced humorous correspondent segments for Good Morning America and although only two of his segments were ever produced, the job got him a spot on The Daily Show on a trial basis in 1997.

The Daily Show

Colbert joined The Daily Show in 1997 as “the new guy.” He developed a correspondent character on the series and used humorous fallacies of logic to explain his point of view. The show did award-winning coverage of the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Presidential elections and released the DVD version of The Daily Show: Indecision 2004. Colbert won three Emmys as a writer for The Daily Show in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

The Colbert Report

Colbert got his own show that he ran from October 17, 2005, to December 18, 2014. He played a right-wing pundit, generally considered an extension of his character on The Daily Show. The series had strong ratings, with 1.2 million viewers nightly during its first week on the air. The show was supposed to end on July 2012 but was extended two years by Comedy Central. In this last episode, there were appearances from former guests of the show, including Paul Krugman, James Franco, and Bill de Blasio. It is reported that Colbert earned $6.0 million annually but his new salary may be $4.6 million for three years.

Colbert Super PAC

Colbert has been quite involved with politics in the U.S., partially due to his show, partially from his own personal interest. In September 2011 he set up the political action committee (PAC) known as Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow. It was featured on The Colbert Report and featured Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, a mock-conservative political pundit. The PAC raised over $1.2 million as of January 2012, and Colbert received a Peabody Award for teaching American viewers about landmark court decision in an innovative way.

The Late Show

In 2014, Colbert succeeded David Letterman as the host of The Late Show and featured George Clooney as his first guest for the premiere on September 8, 2015. It debuted to 6.55 million viewers, although ratings quickly dropped to second place behind The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, but still ahead of Jimmy Kimmel Live. In 2016, the post-Super Bowl episode had the highest-ever ratings for the franchise, with an average of 21.1 million viewers. The show has received highly positive reviews. Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times said it had a “strong start,” and Variety’s Brian Lowry said that it was “mostly terrific,” quoting, “Colbert looks like he has the skill set to settle in and make this job his own, night in and night out.”

Personal Life

Colbert lives in Montclair, New Jersey, with his wife and children. Stephen Colbert’s wife is Eveyln McGee-Colbert, and they have three children: sons Peter (17) and John (14), and daughter Madeline (20). McGee-Colbert was also an aspiring actress, the daughter of Joseph McGee who is a prominent Charleston civil litigator. She double majored in Drama and English at the University of Virginia’s College of Arts and Sciences. After she graduated, she moved to New York to study at the Circle in the Square professional acting school and graduated in 1988. New York is where the couple met; McGee-Colbert says that Colbert’s roommate was dating one of her college friends and they had a big crowd of friends who all hung out together. Sounds like a match made in heaven!
