Joan Lee’s Wiki

Rest in Peace #JoanLee, beloved wife of @therealstanlee. Back in January, I got to interview this amazing woman for a @legionmofficial VR look-back at Stan's career. I'll never forget the moment she said "It's always Spider-Man, Spider-Man, Spider-Man. They don't know the amazing writer he really is." She then talked about the words her longtime love had written for her over a lifetime spent together. There's a very famous story about Stan wanting to leave @marvel, in which Joan advises him "Before you quit, write a comic you're proud of." That comic was #fantasticfour – the birth of the #marvel Universe. He told us tales of heroes but Joan was Stan's personal superhero – and without her, we never get our modern mythology. They say behind every great man is a great woman. In this case, the great woman was always standing right beside him. Joan and Stan were best friends for 70 years. My heart goes out to my hero Stan, his daughter JC, their right hand Max and anyone who ever met Joanie. Thank you, Marvel Muse. We'll miss you, Madame Web. #StanLee #KevinSmith

Born in 1924, Joan Lee’s age was 93 at the time of her death. She married Stan Lee in 1947, but this was not her first marriage. When the couple met, Joan was married to another man.

At the time, Stan was going to meet a hat model his cousin thought he would hit it off with. When he went over to the model’s work to ask her out, Joan, who was married to a soldier at the time, was the one who answered the door. When describing their first encounter Stan said, “I took one look at her —and she was the girl I had been drawing all my life. And then I heard the English accent. And I’m a nut for English accents! She said, ‘May I help you?’ And I took a look at her, and I think I said something crazy like, ‘I love you.’ I don’t remember exactly. But anyway, I took her to lunch. I never met Betty, the other girl. I think I proposed to [Joan] at lunch.”

The couple walked down the aisle on December 5, 1947. In 1949, they purchased a three-bedroom, two-story house in Woodmere, New York, where they lived until 1952. Their eldest daughter, Joan Celia “J.C.” Lee, was born in 1950, and appeared in movies like The Cool World, Iron Man and The Ambulance.

In 1953, the pair welcomed their second daughter, Jan Lee, who unfortunately died three days after her birth.
