Simon Cowell, 50, may have settled down with his hot young girlfriend, Lauren Silverman, and their newborn son, but his May-December relationship with Silverman wasn’t always this perfect. As you might recall, the celebrity couple’s relationship started as an illicit affair—Silverman was still married to Cowell’s close friend, Andrew Silverman, when she got pregnant. After news of her pregnancy went public, Mr. Silverman immediately filed for a divorce, leaving his ex-wife to start a new life with Simon Cowell.
Cowell has now spoken out for the first time about the affair, and how the news of becoming a first-time father really affected him. Although he regrets hurting his friend with the affair, having a baby at the end of it all made it worth it. “It is not something I am proud of or wanted to happen in terms of hurting anyone. It just happened,” Cowell told the Mirror. “You have to deal with it and man up to it. You have to accept the responsibility and criticism.”
Simon Cowell also revealed that before the birth of his and Lauren Silverman’s son in February 2014, he was diagnosed with depression. He spent most of his time at home alone stressing over what to do with his show, The X Factor, and it eventually took a toll on him. “You are always looking for the next high from the show and then actually if you haven’t got anyone to share it with per se, or if you haven’t got a family around you, you can go a bit nuts.” But everything fell into place when his son was born, including the celebrity couple’s May-December relationship.
Cowell says his life has changed for the better. “Maybe because it puts things in perspective having two people in my life who I am responsible for,” he said, adding that he now feels like he has a “home rather than a house,” and that he’s grateful for his “happy ending.”
When asked if he and Lauren Silverman are planning to have more kids, he said, “I wouldn’t rule anything out. From here on in I am not predicting anything.” And when the topic of marriage came up, as it always does, Simon Cowell dodged the subject entirely, simply saying that we’ll have to “wait and see.”
