After its solid debut on January 7, the second episode of the most competitive new show on cable, Shades of Blue, took a big hit, thanks to the Donald Trump vs. Ted Cruz GOP debate last Thursday (January 14). Due to the conflicting air times, the debate ended up overshadowing ratings for Shades of Blue.

However, the Jennifer Lopez-starring cop drama has high hopes for resurrecting its ratings for the first season with Shades of Blue episode 3, titled False Faces, False Hearts, airing this Thursday, January 21, at 10 p.m. EST on NBC. Find out what’s in store this week by checking out the episode previews and teasers, available online via NBC.

For those who were plugged into the debate and couldn’t catch last Thursday’s episode, we’ll fill you in. Detective Harlee Santos (Jennifer Lopez) threw out the wired necklace when she realized that her boss, Lt. Matt Wozniak (Ray Liotta), was about to find out she was the snitch. The episode showed how Santos was torn apart by the fear of losing her daughter, Cristina (Sarah Jeffrey), by getting herself locked up in prison if she failed to abide by FBI Agent Stahl’s (Warren Kole) instructions.

Now, a preview of the upcoming Shades of Blue episode 3 reveals that Wozniak’s pretty sure about Santos being a rat when he confronts her face-to-face about the informants in their crew. And Santos has just entered her doom as, prior to this confrontation, she gets fixed by Stahl with a wired mic (not a necklace this time). Judging by Wozniak’s character, he will find out the truth, even if Santos bluffs under Stahl’s pressure. The sneak peek into Thursday’s episode also shows that the crew gets broken apart as rookie cop Michael Loman (Dayo Okeniyi) gets thrashed by the media for allegedly shooting a minor of his own race in the show’s first episode.

The new suspense series beat its competitors’ ratings with its series premiere on January 7—the Shades of Blue pilot ratings went off the charts beating several other Thursday night shows. Unfortunately, however, it wasn’t able to survive the ratings when the Republicans’ debate hit Thursday’s primetime slot on Fox Business at 9:00 p.m. EST last week. Majorly clashing with the timeslot for Shades of Blue episode 2, the debate also crushed the new Jane Lynch comedy Angel from Hell on CBS and Fox’s American Idol auditions. It was an especially crushing blow for Jennifer Lopez, who suffered a ratings drop for both her Shades of Blue episode and American Idol, as she’s currently a judge on the show’s final season.

With this week’s Shades of Blue episode 3 airing in a debate-free timeslot, the ratings are likely to go up again. But the show must keep the hype up, because the next Republican debate airs on January 28, once again clashing with Shades of Blue.

This week, however, all eyes are on Shades of Blue season 1 episode 3, False Faces, False Hearts, which airs this Thursday, January 21, at 10 p.m. EST on NBC. Till then, catch all the episode promos and sneak-peek videos online on NBC’s Shades of Blue page.
