Co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, Russell Simmons, has an extremely inspiring life lesson to share. He posted a photo of himself to Instagram with the caption, “When u 58 and u lucky to be alive. Drugs alcohol and animal product coulda killed me but I changed, so can you. God has higher plan for you look up [sic].”

Simmons celebrated his 58th birthday on October 4 and that might have had something to do with his sentimental post. His message inspired a lot of fans, many of whom simply said, “Amen.” Some wanted to know who or what woke him up, while others simply wished him a belated “Happy Birthday.” One comment that stood out was from a single mother with two children—one diabetic and the other hyperactive—who shared her story and quoted how much of an inspiration Simmons was to her. She wrote, “Your posts are so inspirational!!! I love them. I count on them everyday to go out and put my best foot forward [sic].”

The entrepreneur and business magnate obviously knows what he’s talking about. After all, he’s managed to build himself an empire and is estimated to be worth upwards of $300 million. The great thing about Simmons is that he makes it a point to share his secrets to success. He even has several tell-all books about his personal and professional life.

Simmons turned a leaf when he became vegan back in 1999. Since then, he has been very active in supporting animal rights, including associations with organizations such as PETA, Farm Sanctuary, and the United Nations. He’s also an avid supporter of gay rights and marriage equality.
