On a Tight Budget
The ceremony will take place at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro and will have audiences glued to their TV screens. Unlike the London ceremony that costed the city an arm and a leg, the Rio Olympics opening ceremony will have a smaller budget. In fact, sources suggest that the Rio Olympics opening ceremony budget is just 10% of the previous London Olympics ceremony budget! Brazilian film director, Fernanro Meirelles, who is in charge of the opening ceremony, defended his low budget. He said that he would be ashamed to spend as much as was spent on London’s opening ceremonies, in a country like Brazil. This was because in Brazil, sanitation and education are top priorities, which is where most of the money is to be allotted. He said he was happy to work with a low budget because it made more sense for Brazil as a country.
Low budget or high budget, one thing is certain. There’s going to be a riot of color at the Maracana stadium on the 5th of August, 2016. For goodness sake, it’s Rio de Janeiro! Some details have leaked through social media, but the organizers are trying hard to keep a lid on the ceremony details. One report suggests that supermodel, Gisele Bundchen will be mugged by an actor and then there will be a thrilling police chase at the stadium. ‘Favelas’ will be shown at one end of the stadium and then the boxes will be brought to the ground below. It is also speculated that Judi Dench will read out a poem at the opening ceremony. The objective is to showcase Brazil as it is, showing both the good and bad parts. Honesty is the overriding factor in this year’s Olympics.
The Best of Brazil
Everybody is curious to know who the Rio Olympics opening ceremony performers are? Information on this is sketchy but it’s believed that Brazilian musicians, Anitta, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil will perform at the opening ceremony. Their participation will show the world the ‘best’ in Brazilian music. Deborah Colker (Brazil’s most famous choreographer) will prepare almost 6,000 dancers to perform at the ceremony. The ceremony directors are deliberately avoiding high tech stuff like moving stages and drones, and instead are focusing on native originality. The ceremony will reflect creativity, emotion and rhythm of the Brazilian people.
