Rihanna is officially back in business! The R&B singer announced the release of her latest album, Anti, via Instagram on October 7. Returning after a hiatus of three long years, fans have been anticipating her big comeback. However, the announcement is kind of getting some mixed reactions.
The 27-year-old posted a picture of the definition of the word “Anti” and it read, “A person opposed to a particular policy, activity, or idea.” The image went on to say that by collaborating with Roy Nachum, a contemporary artist, Rihanna just revolutionized how album art was made, adding, “By continuing to follow her own instincts, her work strives to make an impact by doing the very antithesis of what the public expects.”
So no, contrary to what many people initially assumed, her album is not about being Anti-Christ, which is what a few people commented about on the photo. Despite the few criticisms, the other 128,000 (and counting) fans can’t wait for her new album.
Within the next half hour, Rihanna posted four more photos. The first formally announced her album with the hashtags “ANTI” and “antiR8.” The next two posts displayed the album’s front and back covers. A little girl, who poses a striking resemblance to Rihanna as a child, is seen holding a balloon with a golden crown placed around her eyes. The black and white photo with the gold grown is blurred, almost as if you were looking at it with double vision.
The art is also heavily digitalized, with the top half painted red. But what is really interesting is what looks like braille writing clearly seen across both the front and back cover images. The braille is reportedly of a poem and will enable blind listeners to still experience the art component of the album. The final image Rihanna posted showed the front cover again, this time with “Anti” written on the right side.
Rihanna has already released three tracks from the new album—“FourFiveSeconds,” “Bitch Better Have My Money,” and “American Oxygen”—which have already topped charts. But with the information she has now shared with the world, all we can guess about this highly anticipated album is that it will definitely be something different, and certainly not what everyone is expecting.
