The plot of the upcoming series reveals how the Shay Mountain dwellers are not welcome to live in the town at its foothill—“the outside world.” Their inbred culture, peculiar dialect, and reluctance to know the real world is what has kept them as a secluded clan in the woods. The story revolves around one such clan, the Farrell family. A major hostility arises for the Farrells when a local coal company, Big Coal, decides to clear out part of the mountain’s forest to set up their miners—the problem is that the area they want to destroy happens to be home to the Farrell clan. To save their home, the Farrells will stand together against the county’s forces; meanwhile, on the other side, a few ambitious men with authority will try to take them down to reap the large profits from Big Coal. While the county’s top people don’t mind the fate of these Farrells, Deputy Sheriff Wade Houghton (Thomas M. Wright) knows what the clan can do to the county and its people if the battle goes too far. He warns the company and county about the outcome of a clash with this rural community. As the show’s trailers show, he tries to avoid the conflict altogether, but he’s up against a stronger force than even he realizes.

The series’ promos also show a list of main characters involved in this clash. The Farrell clan is headed by Big Foster (David Morse), ambitious to keep the family safe with the help of his not-so-little son Lil Foster (Ryan Hurst) and his aging mother Lady Ray (Phyllis Somerville). And, of course, no TV drama would be complete without a little romance in the plot—the show’s trailer reveals blooming love between the Farrells, who are culturally inbred. Asa Farrell (Joe Anderson), a clan member who returns to the mountains after living a decade in the civilized world, is seen getting back with his ex-lover G’Winveer (Gillian Alexy), who is now married to Lil Foster. There is also Hasil Farrell (Kyle Wallner), who unexpectedly falls in love with Sally-Ann (Christina Jackson), a beautiful girl from the town. We don’t want to give away too many spoilers, but you can only imagine the drama that will ensue from all the twisted love stories in this show.

While the Farrells battle the outside world, will it ensure their home’s safety and their family’s freedom? And will they survive the company’s lethal measures while trying to take over the mountain? Watch the series premiere, with Outsiders season 1 episode 1 airing at 9/8c on WGN America tonight (January 26). You can also prepare yourself for the show by watching the trailers and promos available online on the network’s web site.
