Nominations for the 89th Oscar Awards have been announced! The Oscars are the biggest validation in Hollywood for those in front of, and behind, the cameras. Despite the countless award ceremonies all over the world, it is the Oscars that mean the most. The Oscar ceremony has become a forum for the biggest names in Hollywood to let their hair down, and also speak about matters they are passionate about. Whether it is the lack of racial diversity in the nominations, inequality in pay, or the political climate, celebrities use the occasion to voice their concerns to the world. History of the Oscars
The Academy Awards, or “Oscars” is an annual awards ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements, decided by the Academy’s voting membership.
The first Oscar ceremony was held in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in a brief 15-minute ceremony. As new innovations were introduced to the communications industry, the ceremony was available to be seen and heard by the masses. The Oscar award ceremony was broadcast on radio for the first time in 1930 and televised for the first time in 1953. Today it is seen live in more than 200 countries, is also streamed online, and is among the most watched TV shows in the world.
