Comedian Mike Epps is back on Netflix this June with another stand-up special, following up his 2015 hit, Don’t Take It Personal. In his new comedy special, Mike Epps: Only One Mike, he talks about the pros and cons of raising four daughters, overcoming dyslexia from his childhood, and the “mysterious infinite wisdom of old people.” Mike Epps’ Netflix special debuts on Tuesday, June 25. Before you start streaming, here’s what you need to know about Mike Epps’ family, including his kids and ex.
Mike Epps Is from Indiana
Born Michael Elliot Epps on November 18, 1970 to Mary Reed and Tommy Epps, he was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana.
In his 2018 autobiography, Unsuccessful Thug, Epps describes a childhood of highs and lows. Though he recalls quaint family gatherings around the TV, memories also include multiple evictions and a shortage of food as his single mother worked hard to provide for him and his siblings.
Don’t Miss: Mike Epps’ Net Worth
Epps eventually dropped out of high school and turned to selling drugs, which soon led to jail time. During one particular stint in juvenile detention, though, he was inspired to switch gears to comedy.
He began his career as a stand-up comedian with HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, but his acting and producing credits have led him to become one of the most recognized faces in Hollywood.
He is most prominently known for his roles in Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and Extinction (2007), The Hangover (2009), and Ice Cube’s Friday franchise. Now that his second comedy show is heading to Netflix, the multi-hyphenate star continues to be a relevant part of today’s entertainment.
Epps Has a Tight-Knit Family
Mike Epps and Mechelle McCain (his former wife from 2006 to 2017) have two daughters together—Madison (born 2007) and Moriah (born 2005). He met Mechelle while filming The Fighting Temptations in 2003.
Mike Epps’ kids spend lots of time with their dad, and he often celebrates his relationships with his daughters on Instagram. He loves to dance with them and support their hobbies and passions.
Before Mike Epps’ ex-wife entered his life, Epps fathered a daughter, Bria (born 1993), from a previous relationship. Bria, his eldest daughter, has a daughter named Skylar (born 2012), making Epps a proud grandfather. Bria keeps busy raising her daughter and working as a professional makeup artist.
Epps also has another daughter, his second after Bria, named Makalya (born 1999), but there is some misinformation about who she really is.
There is some confusion online about Makayla Epps, simply because there are two of them. Makayla (Mike’s actual daughter) does not appear in his photos as often as his other daughters, which could be part of the reason why people are confused about who she is.
His real daughter, who reportedly has the same mother as Bria, is very beautiful and has 27.4K followers on Instagram. She works as a songwriter and singer and appears to be very busy with her career.
The other Makayla Epps, however, is the daughter of Anthony Epps, future head boys’ basketball coach at Campbellsville High School in Kentucky and a former UK player. They are not related to the comedian and his family.
This other Makayla is an American professional women’s basketball player. She last played point guard, number 25, for the Chicago Sky in the WNBA.

He Wished for a Son
In an interview with People in 2016, Epps admitted that although his daughters are all “No. 1” in his eyes, he does wish he had a son.
“My mother had eight sons and one girl. My mother cried every day. A woman can’t control a little boy that much. You think they can, but it’s like dealing with a little man.” He added that he thinks the gene pool got switched, “I had all the girls that she wanted!”
But Epps’ mother Mary is undoubtedly proud of her son Mike. In 2016, he was able to fulfill one of her biggest dreams: to see him graduate from high school.
Epps took the stage that May to receive his high school diploma from Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis. And his mother couldn’t have been happier!
Mike Epps Is Engaged
Mike Epps’ family will soon include fiancée Kyra Robinson, a television producer for shows such as Iyanla: Fix My Life. The couple announced their engagement via Instagram in May 2018, just months after his divorce from ex Mechelle was finalized.
While there’s no word on an official wedding date, Robinson recently posted a group pic from her envy-inducing bridal shower.
Rivalry with Kevin Hart?
Comedians can make a joke out of anything, but that doesn’t mean they all get along. Judging by his October 2018 interview with The Breakfast Club, Epps isn’t a big fan of comedian Kevin Hart. Epps didn’t give much information as to why, but mentioned that before Hart was famous, he hosted him for dinner—and Hart never returned the favor. Kevin Hart’s and Mike Epps’ children go to school together and all get along.
Epps apparently also has an issue with how Hart talked about comedian Katt Williams’ drug habit, saying, “You can’t do that, man… You talkin’ about your cousin in front of them people, with a pocket full of money!” Epps also dislikes when comedians attack each other to climb their way to the top.
Epps even suggests that Hart is resistant to other (less favorable) points of view. “Just because you’re the CEO of something or if you have more than the next person, that doesn’t mean that a person can’t have an opinion about you,” he says. “Everybody is not going to like you, and you can’t be upset with everybody for not liking you.”
