Mistakes happen, just usually not in front of millions of people—a fact that Steve Harvey has learned the hard way! After his disastrous flub during last night’s Miss Universe pageant, where he named the wrong winner, fans and friends alike have been rushing to his defense. But perhaps nobody put it better than retired NFL great Michael Strahan!

The former defensive end, who’s now a TV presenter himself, took to Twitter to defend Harvey, speaking from a point of logic. He said, “Hosting anything especially live tv is anything but easy. @IAmSteveHarvey is still the man and made an honest mistake. It happens! [sic]” It’s true; people often forget that being a celebrity doesn’t make you immune to human error!

Steve Harvey’s mistake occurred at the end of the Miss Universe pageant on December 20, where he announced that Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, Miss Columbia, was the winner of the competition. Unfortunately, it was only after Arevalo had put the crown on that Harvey realized his mistake, and that the real winner was Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurzbach! “Nobody feels worse about this than me,” Harvey said, also tweeting apologies to both women and reiterating that he feels “terrible.”

If nothing else, Michael Strahan forgave him. And with over 850 retweets and more than 2,500 likes, so did a lot of his fans! Supportive messages included, “He made a honest mistake…The media has throw it out of proportion…they aint immune [sic],” “People wont know until it happens to them how hard it is,” and even, “He was obviously overcome by the grace and beauty surrounding him.”

Of course, being social media, not every response was supportive. “You can’t make that mistake though…you just can’t. He had one job…just read what’s on the card,” said one person, while another added, “It shouldn’t HAPPEN at the expense of the two innocent girls. The winner was robbed of her time to shine.” No matter what your stance is, one thing is clear; Steve Harvey will never make a mistake like this again!
