Rio de Janeiro is a city where anything can happen. The good, the bad and the ugly. The ugly is what happened to Ryan Lochte on Sunday morning at Rio. People are asking”Was Ryan Lochte robbed?” And the truth is, yes, he was! People are also asking, “Was Michael Phelps robbed, as well?” The answer is thankfully no! However, if the robbers knew how much is Michael Phelps worth, they probably would have gone after him, and not Lochte!
Cops are Robbers
Luckily Phelps was in the secure Olympic village when Lochte and three other swimmers were robbed at gunpoint. Yes, you heard that right; robbed at gunpoint! The robbers were dressed as police officers, so when the four swimmers were asked to stop their car, nobody suspected anything was amiss. However, the swimmers knew they were in trouble when they were asked to lie down on the ground and hand over their wallets and money. It was a traumatic experience for Lochte and his fellow swimmers. Lochte described the incident to NBCon Sunday afternoon stating, “We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing just a police badge and they pulled us over,” Lochte said. “They pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground — they got down on the ground. I refused, I was like we didn’t do anything wrong, so — I’m not getting down on the ground.”
He added, “And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, ‘Get down,’ and I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever.’ He took our money, he took my wallet — he left my cell phone, he left my credentials.”
Luckily no one was hurt in this robbery. Phelps was also very surprised to hear this news. He said that he had been to Brazil several times before and had never felt unsafe.
Phelps, the Money Maker
Despite the swimmers being robbed, the talk at the Olympics is all about Michael Phelps’ medals. He has a total of 28 Olympic medals now, which includes his 23 gold medals, making Phelps the most decorated Olympian of all time and arguably the greatest swimmer of all time. He is being called the G.O.A.T. It stands for the ‘Greatest Of All Time’. Added to his prize winning efforts is the fact that he endorses several high profile brands. Some of the brands that Phelps promotes are Under Armour, Visa, Speedo, Omega, Louis Vuitton, HP and Proctor & Gamble. So, what is Michael Phelps‘ net worth? It is a staggering $94.0 million and rising! His spectacular performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics has given a further increase to his net worth.
The Road Ahead
Phelps is putting his own prize money into funding the Michael Phelps Foundation, which teaches swimming to underprivileged kids. He is also working towards advising people to live healthier lives.
