As if her role in Lucy wasn’t weird enough. Just when you thought there could never be another Scarlett Johansson, it seems someone had something else in mind. Reuters reported on a product and graphic designer, named Ricky Ma, who took a hard-earned $50,000.00 and a year and a half of his life to fulfill a childhood dream: building a humanoid.
Ma said although he loved animation and cartoons growing up, when he started letting people in on his master plan of actually building a life-sized robot, everyone thought he was crazy.
“A lot of people would say things like ‘Are you stupid? This takes a lot of money. Do you even know how to do it? It’s really hard’.”
Ma would ignore all the hate and go on to create what looks eerily like Avengers star Scarlett Johansson. The Hong Kong resident admits the Hollywood starlet was his muse all along, but didn’t want to reveal her name before completing the robot. Now that his experiment is complete, Ma officially named her Mark 1.
Not Just a Pretty Face
The Scarlett look-alike is more than just a freestanding structure. Mark 1 has facial expressions, responds to commands given through a microphone, and can move—all actions Ma said was difficult to make happen.
Mark 1 is made up of a 3D-printed skeleton covered with silicon skin. The electronic stuff that makes the mini Scarlett work are all underneath.
As happy as Ma is to achieve his dream, this is only the beginning. He sees robots as the future and is hoping to attract some investment in his Johansson prototype so he can have the capital to build more robots. We wonder what celebrity will inspire his next robot!
