Kerry Washington is known for actively supporting cancer, gay rights, peace, and violence against women, besides her Scandal role, of course. And now, the actress is throwing her support to yet another noble cause—body image. Washington has gone on to provide reinforcement to model Gigi Hadid, who was recently body shamed.
The 38-year-old actress shared a photo on her Instagram account of a letter that Hadid, 20, had written and shared. The open letter was addressed to all the haters who wrote discouraging comments about her and her unconventional body shape. The letter described how Hadid let these people get to her initially and how she rebounded from the attacks. She admitted that she was aware of her different body structure, but also wrote that she was not the first to have that body type and would definitely not be the last. Adding that the fashion industry is going through a massive change right now, Hadid said that she was extremely proud of who she was and ended with a strong message to all those who spoke ill of her. It read, “At least be open if not part of the change, because it’s undeniably happening.”
Washington shared Hadid’s letter with her own 1.7 million followers and added the caption, “Love this. Be open,” along with the hashtag, “#ItsUndeniablyHappening.” Her repost gained hundreds of positive comments, praising the actress for supporting this sort of revolution that Hadid started. One of the most inspiring comments was by a user named jfaba, who wrote, “People will always have an opinion regardless of the situation, it is up to you as to how you rise above it. Keep up the great work and keep on inspiring #proud.”
Washington isn’t the first celebrity to speak up for Hadid and other unique models. Kris Jenner, Ashley Graham, and even fellow supermodel Tyra Banks spoke out in her favor. Banks, who also shared a photo of Hadid’s letter on Instagram, wrote that her words were powerful, necessary and vulnerable, as well as real. Banks signed off her caption with, “From one model that had curves and a unique walk to another.”
