Damian Lillard will go down in history as one of the best guards ever. The Portland Trail Blazers have signed Lillard to a long-term contract, making him one of the league’s highest-paid players. The money is going to set his family up for generations, but he hopes the team can flourish around him. Lillard is married to his longtime girlfriend, Kay’la Hanson. She has been with him since before he began his spectacular NBA career. If you haven’t heard of Damian Lillard’s wife yet, our Kay’la Hanson wiki will fix that right away.

Kay’la Hanson’s Ethnicity

Kay’la Hanson was born on November 8, 1991 and hails from Las Vegas, Nevada. She has a mixed heritage of African-American and Puerto Rican descent.

She appears to get her Puerto Rican heritage from her mother. On Instagram, Hanson has proudly identified as a Boricua, derived from Puerto Rico’s Taíno heritage.

Her grandparents, whom she adored, appear to have been African-American. Mamalee, as Hanson fondly addressed her grandmother, passed away in 2016 and her grandfather passed away years before.

Kay’la Hanson and Damian Lillard’s Relationship

California native Damian Lillard’s high school career wasn’t attracting many top college recruiters, so he ended up accepting a scholarship to Weber State in the Big Sky Conference. There, he met the pre-med student from Vegas, Kay’la Hanson. They have been together since college at Weber State.

Though his high school career didn’t make him a top recruit, he racked up impressive stats in college to become a top point guard prospect. The Portland Trail Blazers chose him with the sixth pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.

Hanson was with Lillard and his family celebrating his NBA selection and has been supporting him throughout his career. She even moved to Portland to be with him.

Lillard proposed to Hanson at a private party in Chicago attended by family and friends in February 2020. They got married on September 4, 2021 in a ceremony that included many current and former teammates. It was a wedding with multiple concerts featuring Johnny Gill, Snoop, Common, RL and Tevin Campbell.

Kay’La Hanson and Damian Lillard’s Kids

Their first child, Damian Jr. was born on March 29, 2018. On the same day, Lillard found out that his half-brother Jahrell had been shot multiple times.

When Damian was informed that his girlfriend was about to give birth, he flew back to Portland via private jet from New Orleans after the Blazers-Pelicans match. After 20 hours of labor, their son was born on the morning of March 29.

Later that evening, the point guard learned that Jahrell had been shot in an incident at Clackamas Town Center in Oregon. He arrived in Portland from California to visit his brother when the incident happened. Jahrell was transported to a hospital and was in stable condition.

“That was one of the highest moments of my life, holding my son and having that experience. Then having to deal with a tragedy in the middle of it is unfortunate. But Jahrell is doing fine. Things could be a lot worse,” Damien said. There was no apparent connection between Jahrell and his attackers, who reportedly mistook the younger Lillard for a rival gang member. The attackers were sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for attempted murder.

Lillard again became a dad on January 21, 2021, when Hanson gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. The girl is named Kali Emma Lee Lillard and the boy’s name is Kalii Laheem Lillard.
