Kanye West is guaranteed at least one Moon Man trophy this year. The 38-year-old rapper will be awarded with the highest honor at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards—the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The reason for giving this award to the ”Stronger” rapper was provided in a press release, which stated, “Throughout his career, West has blended musical and visual artistry to powerful effect.”

While West has snagged two awards out of a total of 32 nominations throughout his career—first in 2005 for Best Male Video for “Jesus Walks” and second in 2008 for Best Special Effects for “Good Life”the star hasn’t been nominated this year in any of the categories.

However, receiving the illustrious Vanguard Award is quite the accomplishment. The father of one will be joining the likes of Beyoncé , Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Duran Duran, U2, and the legendary Michael Jackson himself, who have all been honored with the lifetime achievement award in the past.

This news may come as a surprise, given Kanye West’s notorious history with the VMAs. In 2007, the hip hop artist suggested that his race was the reason he lost an award to Britney Spears, stating, “Maybe my skin’s not right.” He vowed not to return to the function, having lost for two straight years.

In 2009, the husband of Kim Kardashian probably sparked his most unforgettable controversy when he stormed onto the stage and interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for the Best Female Video (which she won for “You Belong With Me”) to remark that Beyoncé’s Single Ladies” track was “one of the best videos of all time.”

After all is said and done, nobody can deny that Kanye West has not only had an impressive career thus far, but he has also had a long run performing at the VMAs, from 2004 until 2013. It is still unclear whether he will return to the stage to perform this year.

However, MTV bosses did reveal an impressive list of performers, including Demi Lovato, Pharrell Williams, The Weeknd, Tori Kelly, and A$AP Rocky. Leading nominees are Taylor Swift with ten and Ed Sheeran with six. Additionally, in July it was announced that contentious singer Miley Cyrus will host the show. The 2015 MTV Video Music Awards will air on Sunday, August 30.
