It rarely happens that kids get to go to their parents’ wedding, but Harris and Smith’s daughters were lucky enough to witness their parents tying the knot. Before getting married in August 2016, the couple were raising their two daughters, Demi and Peyton.
Jewel Harris’ Daughters
Their eldest daughter, Demi Smith was born on February 9, 2009. The eight-year-old is a huge fan of Taylor Swift, and even wrote a letter to the singer! She is also very proud of her dad and once told ESPN, “I’m just proud of him because he made the championship without getting kicked off the team.”
When Demi turned eight, Jewel Harris posted an adorable message on Instagram that read, “She is my hero and my angel on earth! thank you for always being there for me and by my side. My strength when I was weak and my eyes when I could not see or think straight. You will always be my motivating force, my daughter and My mini bestie. I Become baffled watching you grow into such a well rounded little lady. Happy 8th birthday. [sic]”
Smith’s second daughter, Peyton is also eight years old. She was born on April 20, 2009, and her dad calls her PeyPey. Keeping with the tradition of leaving cute messages on Instagram about their daughters’ birthdays, Harris took to Instagram on Peyton’s eighth birthday and wrote, “Happy Happy Birthday to my Big Girl Peyton!! A whole 8 years old..where does the time go? 1 of my 3 girls that God has blessed me with…Dmah loves you so much. [sic]”
The Premature Birth of Their Youngest Daughter
Harris and Smith’s youngest daughter, Dakota, was born in January 2017, five months early. The couple released a video announcing her early arrival, sounding very concerned about their daughter, who weighed just one pound when she was born. In the video, they said, “She’s five days old today, and her name is Dakota, and she weighs one pound, we decided to share with the world what’s been going on with our family in the past five days…We know we’re not the only family going through this, has been through this or who will ever go through it.”
Because Dakota was five months premature, she was kept in the hospital until May 23. Her health was a concern for doctors and her parents, who worried about Dakota’s future. In a heartbreaking interview with the couple, J. R. Smith said, “My wife needs me, my daughter needs me. Nothing is more important to me in my life at this point. You see your daughter go through…like in most of my life I’ve been able to be in control of everything and something like that, you have no control. And it’s your child and obviously I would do anything for her. It hurt.”
