Democratic politician John Conyers is reported to have hushed up a sexual harassment case, which was filed by a former employee. The reports have suddenly surfaced now, two years after the alleged complaint. Apparently, the politician paid a hefty amount to shut down all allegations, making us wonder about John Conyers’ net worth.

The U.S. House of Representatives has seen John Conyers as the 44th dean, and now possibly the next in the long list of public figures accused of sexual misconduct. John Conyers’ sexual harassment was reported by Buzzfeed.com, and the website said that Conyers used his office budget to settle the case, instead of the assigned fund for settlements. A Part of the Strong Defense

John James Conyers Jr. was born on May 16, 1929, making his age 88. Conyers was born in Highland Park, Michigan, but went to Northwestern High School, where he was raised. He attended the Wayne State University and graduated with a B.A. degree and a degree in law.

Conyers has been serving the nation since he was 19, when he served as the Michigan National Guard from 1948 to 1950.

Conyers joined the U.S. Army in 1950 and was a part of the Korean War, which lasted three years. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in Korea for one year, and was awarded combat citations.

John Conyers retired from the army in 1957, and was a part of the Civil Rights Movement in 1963, and even served the U.S. Congressman John Dingell before Congress.

House of Reputation

Conyers served the U.S. House of Representatives after his time in the army, during which, he stood twice in the Mayoral elections. In 1989, Conyers stood for Mayor of Detroit against democratic Mayor Coleman Young, who was running for the fifth time. Conyers got third place in the final results, leading his attempt to failure.

In 1993, John Conyers tried his hand at Mayorship again, and this time it was against Dennis Archer, who won with a 54% lead. Conyers has not tried for Mayorship since then.

John Conyers has won the congressional elections a total of 25 times and is in his current 26th term. He is the longest-serving current member of the House, seventh-longest serving member of Congress, and fourth-longest serving member of the house.

Efforts Towards a Better U.S.A

John Conyers was one of the 13 founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). Conyers was the dean of the group, and their main motto was to strengthen the African-American lawmaker abilities. During the Nixon-Watergate scandal, Conyers was the last member of the House Judiciary Committee who voted on the articles of impeachment against then-president Richard Nixon. He was also one of the members on the Nixon enemies list.

In 2005, he released a book called What Went Wrong In Ohio: The Conyers Report On The 2004 Presidential Election, which spoke about the faults in the voting system. In 2006, Conyers put together 10 senior Congress leaders to go against the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 that was passed by then-president George Bush. The action was dismissed later by stating lack of standing.

When President Obama was elected, Conyers issued a statement on the allegations that the Council of American Islamic Relations was planning to plant Muslim spies in Capitol Hill. “It shouldn’t need to be said in 2009, and after the historic election of our first African-American president, but let me remind all my colleagues that patriotic Americans of all races, religions, and beliefs have the right – and the responsibility – to participate in our political process, including by volunteering to work in Congressional offices. Numerous Muslim-American interns have served the House ably and they deserve our appreciation and respect, not attacks on their character or patriotism.”

Monica Conyers’ Controversy

John Conyers’ wife Monica was caught up in her own political scandal back in 2009, when two representatives of Synagro Technologies accused her of accepting bribes of $6,000. The bribe was to give the company access to a contract with the city of Detroit, and later in the investigation, she pleaded guilty.

Mrs. Conyers was sentenced to 37 months in prison, out of which she served a little more than 27 months at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp. She is the former president of the Detroit City Council.
