Jana Carter Is Allegedly Related to Jimmy Carter
Jana Carter is a very private person who isn’t very active on social media. She celebrates her birthday in January, but her age is still a mystery.
However, it is believed that she comes from a famous political family. According to several outlets, Jana is the niece of the former U.S. President, Jimmy Carter.
The 39th POTUS had a younger brother, William “Billy” Carter, who passed away of pancreatic cancer in 1988. Billy Carter and his wife, Sybil Spires, are parents to six children including Kim, Jana, William “Buddy” Carter IV, Marle, Mandy, and Earl.
Billy Carter’s daughter Jana is believed to be the one married to Van Jones. But this has never been confirmed by Jana, Jones, or anyone from the Carter family.
Carter Studied Law and Theology
California resident Jana Carter is also an attorney who acquired her Juris Doctor from the UC Berkeley School of Law. She first acquired her BA in politics from UC Santa Cruz. Van Jones is a Yale Law School graduate and non-practicing attorney.
Carter worked in a few law firms before marrying Jones. She later worked in the Oakland Unified School District. It appears she hasn’t practiced law in recent years, however.
She has instead focused on her children and causes she’s passionate about. She was Director of Search for Common Ground’s USA Racial Healing program. Politically outspoken on Twitter, she voices support for immigrants, socially marginalized groups, and others.
An active member of the Garden Church in California, Carter served as a member of its board. She also studied theology at the Bethany Theological Seminary in Indiana and graduated with a masters degree in 2016.
She Is Mom to Two Sons
Jones said on The Wendy Williams Show that he and Carter had been together for 20 years. The couple married in 2005 before separating back in May 2018, according to TMZ reports.
They are parents to two sons, Mattai and Cabral. Mattai was named after the Kenyan political activist, Wangari Maathai.
"One of our sons is named after the magnificent late Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan activist who founded the Green Belt…
There’s no indication that Carter is working as an attorney and she seems to have devoted herself to her sons. From her limited Facebook activity, it’s clear she’s a proactive soccer mom.
Carter is also environmentally conscious and encourages her sons to participate in her environmental initiatives, too.
Carter Filed for Divorce in September 2018
After two decades together, Jones and Carter reportedly separated in May 2018. It was later revealed that Carter filed for divorce in September of the same year.
In the divorce filings, Carter requested joint physical and legal custody of their sons as well as spousal support. Despite the ongoing divorce, though, the couple is putting up a united front as parents.
After news of their divorce broke, they released a statement: “Though we have decided to end our marriage, we still love each other very much. We will continue raising our kids together, running our businesses together, and supporting each other’s growth.”
Jones also posted a picture with Carter on Instagram the day the news broke. On The Wendy Williams Show, he said he and his soon-to-be ex-wife are still best friends. Carter also continues to showcase Jones’ social justice work on Twitter.
Carter Is a Producer on Jones’ Redemption Project
Though they are no longer together, Jones and Carter continue their professional partnership. The former attorney is now the COO, director, and producer of Magic Labs Media, Van Jones’ production company.
Through Magic Labs Media, Jones and Carter are executive producers of the groundbreaking CNN docuseries, The Redemption Project. The series gives a rare glimpse into the restorative justice process following a victim or family of the victim coming face-to-face with their offender with the hopes of finding the strength to heal from a life-altering crime.
