When Game of Thrones first started, the question “How old is Sansa Stark?” seemed to be popular. Well, now it is season 6—Game of Thrones season 6, episode 5 is the most recent, to be exact—and the main question regarding the character has changed considerably. Now, the question on everyone’s lips is “Is Sansa Stark pregnant?” One of the newest of the multitude of Game of Thrones theories has emerged as we get deep into the current season—and it’s a theory that definitely deserves attention.

During episode 6 of season 5, Sansa Stark was the victim of a graphic rape at the hands of her new husband and current major antagonist, Ramsay Bolton, with Theon Greyjoy watching. The scene was highly controversial, and people questioned why Sansa didn’t physically resist the attack. During a San Diego Comic-Con panel, actress Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa, said she believes that her character didn’t put up a fight because while she could have after careful weighing of the pros and cons and because “she’s one of those characters that kind of does her scheming in her mind, rather than outwardly.”

If Turner is correct in her belief, then a baby may have just been a part of Sansa Stark’s master plan. But is she actually expecting? Fans seem to think so, and they have been suspecting it from as early as right before the premiere of season 6, when promotional stills showed the character standing upright, with keen-eyed fans thinking they spotted a baby bump.

Even now, at Game of Thrones season 6, episode 5, viewers continue to hunt for signs of pregnancy, and this most recent episode may have given them the most ammo yet. For starters, when talking to Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish about the rape, Sansa said, “I can still feel it. I don’t mean ‘in my tender heart it still pains me so’; I can still feel what he did in my body standing here right now.” You can see how people would assume she’s talking about a baby with a line like that.

An interaction elsewhere in the episode between Jon Snow and Sansa Stark also contributed to the theory that the latter is pregnant, as Jon made notice of the fact that Sansa was wearing a new dress. Of course, this could be nothing—a change of clothes is quite normal, after all—but then why did the show need Jon Snow to bring attention to it? It certainly doesn’t seem like traditional small talk; was he subtly noting that this new dress seemed to be a little more spacious to accommodate a growing body? It may not be the strongest evidence in the world, but hey, if you strongly believe in this theory, you have to take what you can get.

If Sansa is pregnant and the child is part of a greater plan, the question then becomes what that plan would be and how the existence of a child would make that much of a difference. Perhaps she is banking on having a so, who would then have a large stake on being next in line for Winterfell after Ramsay Bolton’s death—perhaps planned by Sansa herself—and would allow his mom to make a case for succession? Only time will tell. However, as with the theory that Jon Snow and Meera Reed are twins, do consider that Sansa Stark’s ultimate status, baby or no baby, may not match the official canon of the books as this development would be exclusive to the TV show—provided there’s a development regarding Sansa Stark being pregnant at all, of course.
