Outsiders, WGN America’s third original series, premiered last week and made a strong first impression. But can this isolated series becoming king of the mountain on Tuesday nights, or will it become an outsider to viewers as well?
Originally called Titans, Outsiders is the story of the Farrell family, a clan whose bloodline has lived in the Appalachia mountains for most of its history. With a home on a mountaintop and away from most of the world—including the authorities—the clan will do whatever it takes to protect their land and their privacy.
The Outsiders episode 1 (the series premiere) set up what viewers will see the Farrells dealing with throughout the season, if not the entire series. A coal company (of course are portrayed as evil) attempt to stake a claim on the Farrells’ land and try to have them evicted. Local sheriff Wade Houghton (Thomas M. Wright) is tasked with getting the family off the land; meanwhile, the family black sheep, Asa (Joe Anderson), who has returned to the family after 10 years, leads the clan in defending their territory. And to make matters worse, the family isn’t all on the same page while all this is going on, so the question is who the Farrells’ real enemy is: the oil company or themselves?
Outsiders takes many hints from other recent shows, such as Sons of Anarchy, namely the premise that the family that breaks the law together, stays together. The backwoods hillbilly aspect could be said to be a nod to Duck Dynasty‘s popularity, but Dynasty’s Robertson family has never gone to any of the extremes that the Farrells do—and they certainly haven’t killed anybody!
The Outsiders premiere was apparently well-received by viewers, given close to two million people tuned in for its initial airing and encore. If you want to see what heights this new series can climb to yourself, check it out Tuesdays on WGN America or watch it online after it airs. Outsiders season 1 episode 2 will air on Tuesday, February 2 at 9 p.m. EST—the episode, titled Doomsayer, will air again at 10:00 p.m. and then 11:00 p.m.
