Alison Berns Is from Massachusetts

Alison Berns was born on May 26, 1954 and is a native of Newton Centre, Massachusetts. She has a brother, Lou Berns, and a sister, Betsy Berns Stark.

Alison and her sister were students at Newton North High School, from where Alison graduated in 1972. Alison went on to attend Boston University and graduated in 1976.

After college, Alison worked as a psychiatric social worker. Her current job status is unknown.

Berns and Stern Met in College

New York native Howard Stern pursued a degree in communications at Boston University in 1972. There, he met a fellow student, Alison Berns, through a mutual friend.

Stern asked her to feature in his student film about transcendental meditation. Though it’s unknown what happened of that film, Stern and Berns went on a date and fell in love.

Stern graduated magna cum laude and moved in with Berns. He was working a 9-to-5 job at Benton & Bowles, a New York ad agency, while considering his career prospects. It wasn’t until his mother and Berns encouraged him that he took the job offer at a local New York radio station.

Berns and Stern Have Three Daughters

Alison and Howard tied the knot on June 4, 1978, at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline, Massachusetts, when they were both 24 years old. The couple are parents to three daughters, Emily Beth (born 1983), Debra Jennifer (born 1986), and Ashley Jade (born 1993).

Stern has joked about his marriage with Berns on-air several times. Over the course of their marriage, the “shock jock” also made very outrageous jokes about his then-wife, like telling his listeners that she died in a car accident.

In one such joke, he revealed that Alison had suffered a miscarriage. “We got him in formaldehyde,” he said with his trademark crude humor. “Just because he’s in a bottle doesn’t mean he can’t have a life of his own.”

Their unorthodox marriage was also showcased in Stern’s 1997 biopic, Private Parts. Mary McCormack portrayed Alison and even she admitted that it’s not easy being the wife of Howard Stern.

“The whole thing is weird,” Alison said about the movie at the time. “I’m still trying to get beyond the oddness and realize it’s probably good for people to get a sense of what Howard and I have in private.”

In his recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stern expressed his regrets over becoming disconnected from his adult daughters because of his career. In recent days, he’s considered taking more time to visit his daughters, who he doesn’t see as often he’d like.

Berns Divorced Stern after 20 Years Together

As Stern admitted, his personal life took a back seat to his radio career and growing profile. It was only after a cancer scare that he reevaluated his life and came to regret that he wasn’t much of a father to his daughters, or a husband to Alison.

Stern’s workaholic ways put a strain on his marriage. According to their eldest daughter, Emily, Alison returning to work as a psychoanalyst may have further strained their relationship.

Alison left Stern in 1999, after more than two decades together. They finalized their divorce in 2001.

Despite what some gossip rags would have you believe, Stern’s raunchy ways with some of the female guests on his show wasn’t the reason for their split.

Berns Remarried after the Divorce

After the end of her first marriage, Berns reportedly got hitched again. Per reports, her current husband is a man named David Simon.

The King of All Media went on to have highly publicized relationships with Angie Everhart and Robin Givens. He’s now married to a former model and TV host, Beth Ostrosky.

The breakup of his first marriage hit Stern hard. But the lessons he’s learned since his divorce from Berns may have helped him to be a better husband for Ostrosky.
