How Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo Album Ended Up on a Porn Site

The Life of Pablo

Kanye West’s attempt to offer his latest album, The Life of Pablo, solely through subscription-based Tidal is crashing and burning even harder, because the whole album was reportedly being streamed on a very popular pornography web site: Pornhub, otherwise known as one of the largest porn sites on the web! The Life of Pablo stream had supposedly been available for almost a week before a user on Reddit discovered it and then shared the link yesterday, which sent the number of streams skyrocketing. So, how exactly did Kanye West’s coveted album end up on the raunchy site?

Believe it or not, Pornhub actually makes complete sense as an outlet for illegally streaming a music album, despite the nature of its usual content. Back in 2010, Pornhub was bought out by a company called MindGeek, which operates several other porn sites. As such, MindGeek owns most of the videos that are posted on Pornhub, although most of them are uploaded by “enthusiasts.”  In other words, anyone with an account can not only view and download videos, but also upload them. And unlike on YouTube, it takes a little longer and is a little more tedious to get stuff taken down from Pornhub, which means Kanye’s label had to work overtime to get The Life of Pablo stream pulled off the site.

Fortunately for Kanye, he still has some influence, because the stream is no longer available on Pornhub—it appears to have been pulled earlier today. If you were still able to come across it, you’ll likely see a message reading, “Video has been removed at the request of KANYE WEST.”

If you’ve thought about illegally downloading The Life of Pablo, don’t worry, because you’re not the only one who turns to illegal downloads—in fact, even Kanye West himself has looked into it! After going on a rant about how his album would only be available through Tidal and reportedly even looking into suing one streaming site, Pirate Bay, for leaking it, Kanye inadvertently revealed that he himself uses Pirate Bay. Kanye recently posted a picture on Twitter of a screenshot of his browser, not realizing (or did he?) that one of the other open tabs showed he had been searching Pirate Bay for Serum, a synthesizer plug-in that usually retails for about $200.

People were quick to point out the tab, including DJ Deadmau5, who replied to Kanye’s post with a close-up shot of the original picture, along with, “What the f*ck @kanyewest … Can’t afford serum? Dick.” He then shared a second tweet calling for a Kickstarter campaign—an obvious jab at Kanye starting his own campaign to appease his so-called $53 million debt—to help raise $200 so the rapper can buy Serum legitimately.

The best part of this all? Rocker Tommy Lee actually apparently donated $200, or at least that what it looked like in the screenshot of a GoFundMe page he tweeted earlier today. Tommy Lee captioned the photo, “Yo @kanyewest Now you can buy @deadmau5 ‘s and @steve_duda ‘s Serum! Your welcome!!! it’s not nice to steal!! [sic]”

So what was Kanye West’s reaction to this whole thing? With another Twitter rant, of course! But this time it was a personal attack against deadmau5, particularly the getup he wears on stage (the giant Mickey Mouse-like helmet). Kanye teased the DJ with a series of incessant tweets about the helmet, like who carries it onto the plane and if it gets hot. Then he posed the question about whether or not his future wife “will have a giant minnie mouse head” and if he can bring the helmet to put on a show for his daughter’s birthday party.  It’s hard to tell what Kanye’s objective was, but one thing’s for sure—a Twitter feud between Kanye and deadmau5 is turning out to be downright entertaining!
