Congratulations to actress and producer Hilary Swank! The Academy Award winner just announced her engagement to Ruben Torres, a former pro tennis player and current coach and financial advisor. The announcement was made by the star on Instagram and features a pic of the two in the wilderness with the text “Went on a hike and this happened! I am so happy to share with you all this exciting and incredible news… the engagement to my dear Ruben!!! [sic]”
The celebrity couple has been dating for about a year now, and was first seen together in July though their red carpet debut didn’t come until September. The engagement reportedly began on March 19, when Torress asked Swank to marry him while the pair was at the BNP Paribas Tennis Open in Palm Springs.
However, it’s been a long, winding road in the Hilary Swank dating timeline with Ruben being her (knock on wood) second husband, and the actress possibly having been part of an affair. Will her relationship with Ruben Torres fare better and result in the kind of happy ending seen in the movies? Let’s look back on what got her to this point.
At a Hollywood Athletic Club party is where Hilary Swank met Chad Lowe, an actor and director and the younger, less famous brother of Rob Lowe. Lowe would call the meeting an “old cliché where you see somebody, lock eyes across the room, and time stands still” while Swank, who was filming Quiet Days in Hollywood at the time, said it was “love at first sight.” The two would meet for lunch and dinner before slowly transitioning into a full-on relationship.
After five years of dating, Swank and Lowe got married on September 28 in what would be the first marriage for both parties. The couple would largely avoid controversy, aside from in 2000 when Swank forgot to thank her husband during her Academy Award acceptance speech; she would not make the same mistake when she won another Oscar in 2005. For an unknown reason, the two did not have kids.
In January, the couple announced their separation only to announce the divorce in May, which was finalized in November. According to Swank, the main reason for the split was Lowe’s substance abuse problems, saying he had kept it a secret from her, that it had been a problem for years, and that he was sober by the time of the divorce’s announcement.
Shortly after her divorce, in December, Swank began seeing her agent, John Campisi. Apparently this relationship was a tad illicit as Campisi was said to still be married when it began, meaning the two were involved in an affair. Campisi’s wife reportedly filed for divorce soon after.
Hilary Swank and John Campisi headed to splitsville after five years together. No reason was given for the separation, though the breakup apparently happened earlier than it was announced.
Still spotted together as late as the summer, at some point, Swank quietly broke up with Fleury; so quietly, in fact, that it apparently was never reported on.
Regardless, Hilary Swank would meet Ruben Torres later in the year, which brings us to the present.
