Zayn Malik has released the next single from his latest album and it may be a jibe at his former life in the pop boy band, One Direction (1D). The “BeFoUr” lyrics may be aimed at Zayn’s former fame and his experiences during the One Direction days.
“BeFoUr” will be Zayn’s fourth single off his debut album Mind of Mine. Zayn’s new song seems to be speaking of his feelings and the mixed response he got when he left One Direction to pursue a solo career. Zayn left the band in March 2015 and is now producing and performing his solo albums under the stage name Zayn.
When you listen to Zayn’s new track, “BeFoUr,” and read its lyrics, the 23-year-old singer seems to singing of his life as a 1D member and how his solo success isn’t quite the same. Some “BeFoUr” lyrics state, “I’ve done this before, not like this, not like this,” letting us know how it’s been for the English pop singer to live life on his terms. Lyrics like, “So say what you wanna say, what you want/Shame is you won’t say that to my face” send mixed signals because they could be referring to Zayn taunting the media that criticized his departure from 1D or to his criticism of the other One Direction members—Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne—for apparently shamming him behind his back.
Another notable fact is that Zayn left 1D right after their fourth studio album, Four (2014), was released, making his new single, “BeFoUr,” a probable jab at his former band mates. At this point, it’s all open to interpretation, so listen to “BeFoUr” and/or read the lyrics at Genius.com, and let us know what you think the song is about!
