This year hasn’t been great for a lot of couples. Following as many as 22 celebrity breakups in just a little over half the year, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale are now splitting up too.

Stefani, 45, filed for divorce on August 3, claiming irreconcilable differences. The former celebrity couple would have celebrated their 13th anniversary this September. Since they have no prenup, the couple will most likely split their $100 million fortune equally under California law. Stefani also requested joint custody for their three children: Kingston (nine years old), Zuma (six years old), and 16-month-old Apollo.

According to TMZ, the divorce was a long time coming and Stefani finally went ahead with it because she suspected that Rossdale might be cheating. A source reportedly told the site that she also felt like he was spending too much time away from home, but he disagreed because she travels, too.

Whatever the case may be, the pair released a statement that while they mutually decided to end their marriage, the two will “remain partners in parenthood” and will be committed to jointly raising their three children “in a happy and healthy environment.”

“To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time,” they added.

The pair first met in 1995, when Gwen Stefani’s band, No Doubt, opened for Rossdale’s band, Bush. Stefani and Rossdale tied the knot seven years later in 2002 in a grand ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Two years into their marriage, Rossdale was proven to be the father of 15-year-old Daisy, daughter of model Pearle Lowe. Stefani and Rossdale hit a rocky patch in their marriage, but recovered soon after.

In December of 2005, Stefani confirmed her first pregnancy mid-concert and in May the following year, Kingston was born, followed by Zuma Nesta Rock in August 2008. It was recently revealed that Rossdale found out about their third pregnancy via e-mail. He joked to Howard Stern about how Stefani had e-mailed him a photo of her positive pregnancy stick while he was touring and included the caption, “LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO ME NOW.” The couple welcomed Apollo Bowe Flynn on February 28 last year.

Their split may come as a shock, given that Stefani praised her 49-year-old ex-husband earlier this year, explaining how she married one of her only two boyfriends. She said that it was a miracle that they stayed together for so long despite going through a lot.
