Former Grey’s Anatomy star, Katherine Heigl, is preparing to make her (hopefully) permanent comeback to television in a new legal drama produced by none other than her previous show’s bosses.
Heigl, 36, has not been nearly as successful on the big screen as she was in the six seasons she played Isobel Stevens in Grey’s Anatomy. The actress claimed to have left the show in 2011 to focus on her family rather than her career.
Heigl has been married to musician Josh Kelley since 2007 and the celebrity couple has two adopted children together—six-year-old Nancy Leigh Kelley from South Korea and three-year-old Adalaide Marie Hope Kelley from the U.S.
However, Heigl now claims to be ready for a return to the silver screen. Last year, she starred in NBC’s show State of Affairs, which got canceled after only one season. The actress hopes for a more successful return by joining hands with Grey’s Anatomy producers Joan Rater and Tony Phelan in this new legal drama show that will reportedly co-star Laverne Cox. Variety reports that Cox will play a transgender, Ivy League graduate attorney.
The show, titled The Doubt, is the rework of a pilot filmed by the bosses, but not picked up by networks. Heigl will replace KaDee Strickland of Private Practice fame as Sadie Ellis in the lead role. The character, adds Variety, will be a “smart, chic and successful defense lawyer” who gets involved romantically with a client who just might be responsible for a brutal crime.
Meanwhile, Cox will retain her role from the original pilot; thanks to huge success of her hit show Orange Is the New Black, in which she stars.
Despite working on a new movie, Unforgettable, Katherine Heigl appears to be putting her career aspirations in (ironically) The Doubt, which will hopefully be picked up by CBS for the full 2015-2016 season.
