Remember when shows didn’t have mid-season finales? It feels like it wasn’t that long ago when viewers weren’t left hanging over the winter as to the fates of their favorite characters and stars. However, the second half of Gotham season 2 is promising more than one surprise with their latest announcement: a The O.C. reunion thanks to guest star Melinda Clarke!

It was already announced that the latter half of Gotham season 2 would feature the introduction of another member of Batman’s rogues’ gallery, Mr. Freeze. But it was just announced that Melinda Clarke will be playing a villainous role as well. Clarke’s appearance on the show will reunite her with The O.C. alum Benjamin McKenzie, who played Ryan Atwood and is now Gotham lead character James “Jim” Gordon, future friend and ally to Batman. (Fun fact: In the comics, Gordon has currently taken up the role of Batman; perhaps a future role for McKenzie once Ben Affleck is done?)

Playing the money-hungry Grace Van Dahl—not too far a stretch from aspects of her character from The O.C., Julie Cooper—Clarke joins at an interesting time for the show, as Gotham season 2’s first half ended with Gordon joining The Penguin in killing evil mayor Theo Galavan. It will be interesting to see what happens now that Gordon has crossed a personal and moral line, but we’re sure it will be alright; after all, this is the character that has to occasionally talk Batman down from breaking his own code and finally killing The Joker. Maybe this kind of experience is why, but we’ll have to wait and see!

For the record, Melinda Clarke’s Grace Van Dahl is an original character, as opposed to someone from the established Bat-mythos. But who knows, maybe if her role is successful enough they’ll make her a regular character and reveal her as someone from the Dark Knight’s history; with a ton of CGI and makeup, she’d likely make a fantastic Killer Croc!
