(Spoiler alert! Do not read if you haven’t watched the latest Game of Thrones episode.)
As Game of Thrones fans may have already learned, the season is supposed to end with a memorable showdown between the resurrected Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton, putting everyone’s lives at stake in the North. Plus, The Hound is back! After watching the latest episode, fans have no doubt been searching for “The Hound Theories,” “Game of Thrones Theories,” and “CleganeBowl.”
If you visit any Game of Thrones fan site, you will no doubt see the latest posts about the Mountain and The Hound. For those who don’t know, The Mountain is Gregor Clegane and The Hound is Sandor Clegane, and they’re brothers. The latest popular fan theory has been called “CleganeBowl” and is a term fans have been using to describe what they expect will be an epic battle between The Mountain and The Hound, a.k.a. the Clegane brothers. Naturally, both brothers carry nothing but a deep hatred for each other, and it’s highly believed that they will have no choice but to settle their differences with a fight to the death. The next time you think your family has problems, just remember CleganeBowl.
As fans may remember, we last saw The Hound in season 4 as he suffered fatal wounds during his battle against Brienne. Arya also ignored his pleas for a mercy kill and left him to die bleeding out in the wilderness. So, fans can understand why he wouldn’t be in the best mood coming back. Fans who have read the books already know that The Hound’s return has been predicted and was evident in the scene from “A Feast For Crows,” in which Brienne encounters a group from The Faith of the Seven. In the group appeared a large gravedigger with an obvious limp, and many fans believed that he nursed The Hound back to health.
Now that The Hound is back, he has a bone (pun intended) to pick after a group of settlers he joined were murdered by the Brotherhood Without Banners. Gregor Clegane (The Mountain) is a murderous monster who burned his brother as a child and now serves as Cersei’s guard without question. Sometimes it’s hard to tell which brother is worse as both don’t have the best track record for doing good deeds—though Sandor tried at least.
A possible theory is that, after the High Sparrow has Cersei stand trial, she will request a trial by combat and select The Mountain as her champion. When this happens, there are fans who believe the Faith Militant will choose The Hound to fight his brother, using his known hatred as sure motivator. This action would allow revenge on both the Mountain and Cersei, whose house The Hound once served.
Game of Thrones fans have sometimes been known to conjure ridiculous theories that often get disproved, but CleganeBowl is one of the better ones after “R+L=J.” But fans are expecting CleganeBowl very soon, and there’s a good chance it will happen as the show is known for violence and family drama.
