|When They See Us
Netflix’s When They See Us has moved everyone with the retelling of the Central Park Five’s story. But Freddy Miyares is causing everyone to pause and catch their breath. Each of the Central Park Five figures is portrayed by a teen actor and an adult actor, barring Jharrel Jerome’s Korey Wise. Freddy Miyares portrays the older Raymond Santana, the Latino youth wrongfully convicted in the Central Park Jogger case. As gripping as this miscarriage-of-justice story is, Miyares has viewers undeniably swooning over him. If you’re one of those who had to pause the series to take in his handsomeness, our Freddy Miyares wiki is just the right thing for you.
Freddy Miyares Is Latino-American
Freddy Miyares Jr. was born on October 26, 1994 to Freddy Miyares Sr. and Alma Miyares. He and his sister, Alejandra Miyares, were raised in Miami, Florida where his family still currently resides.
Freddy and his sister inherited Honduran and Cuban roots from their parents. Freddy is even fluent in Spanish.
Growing up as a Latino-American kid, Miyares faced a lot of discrimination. He said that when he and his other Spanish-speaking friends spoke in their native tongue, they were mocked as “refugees.”
Freddy said the experience made him avoid speaking Spanish as a child. But he now regrets it because he’s no longer as expressive in Spanish as he’d like to be.
While his sister graduated from the University of Florida and currently works at Bank of America, Freddy moved to Pennsylvania for school. Per his latest Instagram activity, Miyares is now based in New York and California.
Miyares Studied at Carnegie Mellon
The talented performer pursued his acting ambitions at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama in Pennsylvania. Before graduating with a BFA in acting in 2017, he earned a scholarship and also made the Dean’s List.
During his time there, he acted in various student theater productions. He also performed on the local theater scene.
According to his CMU profile, he’s skilled at kickboxing, dancing, and a little bit of guitar, among other things.
Miyares Plays Raymond Santana on When They See Us
When They See Us is sure to give more visibility to Miyares, who has bagged a great breakout role. Marquis Rodriguez plays the teen Raymond Santana, while he plays the older version.
Both Rodriguez and Miyares spoke to Santana about what he went through and have spoken at length in several interviews about their admiration for him. To both the young Latino actors, the opportunity to work with John Leguizamo, who plays Santana’s father, was also a great experience.
Like the rest of the cast, Miyares has also spoken about getting into the shoes of the real Central Park Five and reenacting their ordeal.
“This isn’t an isolated incident,” Miyares said. “This happens so frequently. Not only were these individuals affected; it was their families and, moreover, their neighborhood. This has a rippling effect. Some of their neighbors thought that [the boys] were demons and blamed the parents for raising demons, because they fed on what the media was giving them.”
Miyares Is Also a Film Editor
The young actor is signed with CAA and Silver Linings Entertainment who represent him professionally. He didn’t have much experience acting on-camera before Ava DuVernay cast him as the older Raymond Santana. He had an appearance on Elementary in 2018, but that’s about it.
Miyares does have some diverse skills, though. He also has talent as a film editor signed with Don Buchwald & Associates for commercials.
