Everyone has their own way of getting through a difficult breakup—for Charlize Theron, it might just be motherhood.
Just a month after calling off her whirlwind engagement to Sean Penn, Us Weekly has confirmed that the newly single actress has adopted a second child, an African American baby girl named August, who was born in the U.S. and has been with Theron since July. Theron, 39, is already a mom to four-year-old Jackson, whom she adopted in 2012 (Jackson is also African American.)
Although Theron hasn’t released a comment herself on the news about the adoption, she has spoken openly in the past about how happy she is to be a mother. “I do know that choosing to be a mom in my late 30s has been really great for me,” she said in a recent interview with W magazine, adding, “It’s given me perspective.”
Theron has also said in the past that although she never really planned on being a single mother, she always knew that she would someday adopt. In a 2012 interview, she recalls how her mother found a letter that Theron had written, presumably when she was younger, asking her mom to take her to the orphanage so that she could “go and adopt a baby.”
Charlize Theron and Sean Penn were reportedly planning to adopt a second child together—there were even reports that he wanted to legally adopt Jackson, too—but as we know, their engagement never made it down the aisle. The adoption process for baby August is said to have taken about six months, which means Theron and Penn would’ve still been together when it started. Despite their relationship ending, it seems Theron went ahead with growing her family on her own.
