The 2016 Hollywood awards season officially kicked off last night with the People’s Choice Awards. The show took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California and was telecast live on CBS, presenting both fresh entrants as well as all-time top choices with awards for being the best in mainstream pop culture throughout 2015.
Glee star Jane Lynch presented the awards show by starting with an entertaining opening act featuring a musical performance—she performed her rendition of 2015’s pop hit “Shut Up and Dance,” asking everyone to instead “Stand Up and Choose with Me.” Dressed in angel wings and calling herself an Angel from Hell (the name of her new show, which premieres tonight), Lynch presented the show impeccably—she even managed to take a dig at Steve Harvey’s recent Miss Universe goof-up with fellow comedian Thomas Lennon.
As the show began, the high-hitters on the winning list were Taylor Swift, Kevin Hart, The Big Bang Theory, and Furious 7.
The billion-dollar-grossing movie Furious 7 won the top two movie awards: Favorite Movie and Favorite Action Movie. In the acceptance speech, lead star Vin Diesel sang a tribute to his friend and co-star Paul Walker, who passed away in 2013 halfway through filming the movie. Diesel credited the movie’s huge success to his late co-actor.
The major TV winner of the night was the cast and crew of THE hit comedy series The Big Bang Theory, winning Favorite TV Show and Favorite Network TV Comedy Series. The show tweeted about its victory, as well as the victory of its cast member, Jim Parsons, who won Favorite Comedy TV Actor for his role as Sheldon Cooper.

Other top choices this year were Kevin Hart and Taylor Swift. Funnyman Kevin Hart won Favorite Comedic Movie Actor for his film Get Hard, as well as Favorite Cable TV Actor. Taylor Swift bagged the Favorite Pop Artist and the Favorite Female Artist awards for her album 1989. Actress Sandra Bullock also came out on top, winning the title of Favorite Movie Actress for her 2015 films Our Brand Is Crisis and Minions.
One of the biggest surprises from last night’s show was the number of fresh-off-the block winners, like The Weekend, Dakota Johnson, Taylor Kinney, Ed Sheeran, Meghan Trainor, Priyanka Chopra, Ellen Pompeo, and many more who beat all-time favorites in several of the award categories.
Singer Ed Sheeran grabbed the Favorite Male Artist award, while The Weeknd won his first People’s Choice for Favorite R&B artist. Meghan Trainor won the Favorite Album award for her album Title. Dakota Johnson won Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress for Fifty Shades of Grey. The actress, who bared it all in the movie, actually had a wardrobe malfunction while receiving the award, as her dress ripped from behind, to which she simply replied, “ Well, it’s not like nobody in here hasn’t already seen my boobs!”
Taylor Kinney also won his first People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Actor for his role as a firefighter in Chicago Fire. While accepting it, he made special mention of his fiancée Lady Gaga, saying,” I love you babe, thank you for having my back and supporting me. You inspire me every day. [sic]”
The popular Drama series Grey’s Anatomy came out on top as well. The cast won the Favorite TV Series Drama award, while the leading actress Ellen Pompeo won herself for Favorite TV Drama Actress. Actor Jensen Ackles won his second People’s Choice award for Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor for his role as Dean Winchester in Supernatural. Another debut winner was Bollywood diva Priyanka Chopra, who bedazzled on the red carpet and won Favorite Actress in a New TV Series for Quantico.
Apart from Jane Lynch’s hilarious presentation, the show also had an amazing performance by So You Think You Can Dance judge and singer/dancer Jason Derulo, who hit the stage with a medley of his hit songs, including “Get Ugly” and “Want to Want Me” from the album Everything Is 4. Derulo also made his first appearance with his girlfriend Daphne Joy, who bared her back in a white Willfredo Gerardo gown and glittery silver Louboutin pumps on the red carpet. Another highlighting performance was by newbie Shawn Mendes, who performed his hit song “Stitches” along with a duet of his recently released song “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with Camila Cabelo.
And for those who are wondering if the show went on without any glitches, you know you’re wrong! As the hosts of the hit talk show The Talk were on the stage receiving their award for Favorite Daytime TV Hosting Team, an unwanted guest intercepted their acceptance speech. Questioning the security conditions of an award ceremony like this, the man suddenly crashed onto the stage, taking the mic off Sarah Gilbert while she was giving the speech. As the guy began promoting rapper Kevin Gates, he was sent off before he could say much. The Talk co-host Sheryl Underwood took the control of the situation by calling in security and tried grabbing the mic from the guy as he was getting kicked off the stage, literally, by fellow co-host Sharon Osborne.
In spite of the ruckus, the show was a great hit to start off this year’s awards season. The Golden Globe Awards are up next on January 10, followed by the Grammy Awards on February 15 and the Oscars on February 28.
