Elaine was born on June 28, 1992 in Banana ground, Manchester Parish, Jamaica. She is the only child of her parents and was raised by her grandmother since she was seven years old. In one of the interviews, her grandmother said, “There is nothing too great for Elaine. I would give her the world.” She also added, “When she was young and she went to school, she come home and I’d get her a nice dinner even if I had to borrow the money.” Her family’s financial situation was not great, so they had to work hard to make ends meet.

During her school years, she was an average runner. She ran for Christiana High School and later on for Manchester High School. Her true potential was seen in the year 2009, when she came fourth in the Jamaican Boys and Girls Championships. However, in the year 2011, she was kicked out of the team for disciplinary reasons.

Her college coach, Paul Francis said, “She competed in the 4×100 in Class One and her second year in Class One, she got booted off the track team because she is kind of saucy. So she didn’t run in her final year in 2011.” However, she was selected by her coach Francis and he gave her the scholarship to the University of Kingston.

Elaine already has earned herself the title of the world’s fastest woman for the 200m race. During the Jamaica Olympic trials in July, she earned the title of being the 4th fastest woman ever. There is certainly no doubt that she out-performed herself this year at the Rio Olympics 2016.

Elaine’s rising career in running is due to her coach, Stephen Francis. So, it is not just due to Paul’s hard work and training session that Elaine’s career is on the rise, half of the credit goes to Stephen, who is the head coach of MVP Track & Field Club.

“She is with the best coach available in the conditioning and developing of athletes, Stephen Francis,” said Paul, who is also an assistant at MVP. “She is bright and brilliant and she applies that dedication to his training,”

Thompson remembers the particular conversation she had with Francis early in her collegiate career which ultimately changed her life for good. She said, “I went to a track meet and didn’t do too well and he basically took me to the side and gave me a speech that really motivated me and changed my life. “I can’t say (exactly what he said), but he basically said that I was not in high school anymore and I needed to take things more seriously; that I needed to realize that I am running with the big girls now, so it pushed me to take it seriously.” Since the year 2013, She has worked hard and has improved her performance in the 100m race every year.
