The reigning highest-paid actor in the world, Dwayne Johnson, has a bunch of movies being released and filmed in 2017. Looks like Johnson is making sure he remains on the top of that list this year! Check out Dwayne Johnson’s new movies coming out in 2017.
In August 2016, Robert Downey Jr. lost his top position in Forbes’ list of the World’s Highest Paid Actors to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The erstwhile wrestler banked a whopping $64 million salary in 2016 with movies like Fast and Furious 7 and San Andreas. Johnson has established himself as the most sought-after action hero to break box office records. In fact, the third installment of G.I. Joe has been held up because Johnson is incredibly busy with his other films. Besides releasing some of the most anticipated movies this year, The Rock is also in the middle of filming for upcoming releases. Take a look at which new movies starring Dwayne Johnson will be released in 2017.
Fast & Furious Comes Back to the Big Screen
Perhaps the most anticipated movie of 2017, the eighth installment of the mega-popular Fast and Furious franchise will come out in April this year. Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as Luke Hobbs in Fast & Furious 8. The movie created a buzz from the moment it was announced. The franchise’s fans are on the edge of their seats waiting to know how will the story continue following the tragic death of Paul Walker. Fast & Furious 8 will be something of a tribute to Walker, who was very close to his co-stars, Vin Diesel and Johnson.
Johnson and his fellow Fast and Furious cast regulars, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Ludacris will return for the eighth adrenaline-pumping car chase, along with the addition of Charlize Theron as the new antagonist.
Fast & Furious 8 sees our favorite team of high-speed car chasers leave behind their hard-earned normal life when Dominic Toretto (Diesel) betrays his friends and returns to a life of crime after being seduced by a mysterious woman named Cipher (Theron). Paul Walker’s character, Brian O’Connor, was shown to have retired from the game at the end of Furious 7. However, Vin Diesel has hinted a couple of times that it is not the end for Brian O’Connor. So we’ll have to wait and see what’s in store for us when Fast & Furious 8 hits theaters on April 14, 2017.
The Baywatch Crew Comes to Town
Baywatch is the latest in the trend of remaking popular franchises. There have been hits and misses in the remake business, most not living up to the original. So when you remake one of the most popular TV shows that showcased lifeguards in a new light, how do you make it a blockbuster? By casting one of the world’s biggest actors to bring in the big bucks, of course!
Dwayne Johnson will revive Mitch Buchannon, the character that made David Hasselhoff a household name, in the action-comedy remake directed by Seth Gordon. Buchannon has taken a new lifeguard under his wing (Zac Efron). Kelly Rohrbach will play Pamela Anderson’s most famous role to date, C.J. Parker. Quantico star, Priyanka Chopra is Victoria Leeds, the movie’s main antagonist, who will create problems for the Baywatch crew. Alexandra Daddario and Ilfenesh Hadera will also don the iconic red swimsuits.
Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff are said to cameo in the movie. The Baywatch crew will be doing their classic slow-mo run down the beach on May 26, 2017.
Johnson Goes on Wild Adventures in Journey 3 and Jumanji
Journey to the Center of the Earth is another franchise that made box office records with more than $200 million. Johnson was cast in the sequel, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which led the movie to a surprising $335 million, surpassing its predecessor.
In 2014, it was announced that two more movie adaptations of Jules Verne’s adventure novels are underway. Johnson will return for the third installment, Journey 3: from the Earth to the Moon. The release date was initially to be June, 2017. However, Journey 3 has been postponed and we might not see it until 2018.
Another fantasy adventure film starring The Rock will be a new adaptation of the Chris Van Allsburg children’s book, Jumanji. The book has had an animated TV series and a film adaptation, which portrayed the late Robin Williams as the principle character, Alan Parrish, and a teenage Kirsten Dunst as Judy Shepherd. The 2017 version will be a sequel to the first Jumanji.
Along with Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillian, Jack Black, and Nick Jonas will star in the new Jumanji. This time, four teenagers get sucked into the world of Jumanji where they transform into characters of the game. After much shuffling of the release date, Sony Pictures announced that the film will be released on December 22, 2017.
Dwayne Johnson has more than 10 projects in his to-do list. One of them is Doc Savage, another superhero addition to the expanding DC universe. Johnson will also try to replicate the success of San Andreas with a sequel that has yet to start filming. DC is also aiming to amp up its game, and has casted The Rock in the live action movie Shazam where he will play the villainous Black Adam.
