The question on everyone’s mind at the end of the December 6 episode was, “does Toby die on This Is Us?” Toby, played by Chris Sullivan, was recently dumped by his girlfriend Kate (Chrissy Metz) over her strong desire to eat healthier and lose weight. Kate expressed over dinner that she didn’t want to move forward in the relationship with him if he didn’t have the same goal. If you’re itching to wonder did Toby die on This Is Us, you’ll have to wait several more weeks before we find out if he was revived! Without further ado, here’s a recap of the season 1 finale.

The season 1 finale of This Is Us left fans with a devastating cliff-hanger to mull over, until the show returns in 2017. Dear, sweet Toby, mourning the end of his relationship with Kate, flew all the way to New Jersey to tell her that he couldn’t bear to go on with out her! Later that night, Toby collapsed onto the coffee table in Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) home and was rushed to the emergency room. The episode came to a tragic and shocking end, after Toby flatlined on the operating table as the doctors tried to revive him. Now, viewers are shocked and heartbroken, wondering if Toby will be revived in the season 2 premiere, or if this is the last they’ll see of his sweet, lovable character.
Toby’s role in Kate’s life has been monumental since the first episode of season 1. He encouraged her to be the best version of herself, even if that meant achieving those goals without him. When Kate made the hard choice to pursue her personal health and not let even him hold her back, both felt the weight of the loss. If Toby doesn’t make it back, Kate will be crushed. She has already been doing her best to lose the weight she’s gained, and has even been contemplating getting gastric bypass surgery to drop the weight at a reasonable speed. But what will she do without Toby to support her? He has always been her rock—someone who believed she was worthy of love and encouraged her to push through the challenges she faced during their relationship.
Sullivan spoke to EW about the episode, but remained tight-lipped about Toby’s fate. When asked to comment on Toby’s motives behind trying to make it work again with Kate, Sullivan said, “When it comes to relationship compromise, it’s a fine balance between doing something for your own happiness, and finding happiness in being of service to another person, in whatever way that ends up being.”
Fans are all hoping Toby survived the fall and gets help for whatever health conditions he has been privately dealing with. He served as comedic relief with his sarcastic comments, and his gentle way of loving Kate inspired us all. The This Is Us cast sure won’t be the same without him! As anxious as we all are, viewers will have to wait until the show returns in 2017 to find out Toby’s fate.
