Before the Fame
Gerald McRaney’s age is 70, and he was born on August 19, 1947. The award-winning actor hails from Collins, Mississippi.
His parents, Clyde and Edna McRaney, moved the family around the state a lot, as his father was a realtor and contractor. He has a sister, Ann McRaney Simpson, and a brother, Buddy McRaney.
The Mississippi native has Scottish and Choctaw lineages. He worked in the Louisiana oil fields before becoming an actor.
McRaney’s interest in acting came when he injured his knee after playing football in junior high school. The injury resulted in him joining the drama club and becoming a very good actor. The success he found in school trickled into his college years.
The aspiring actor went to the University of Mississippi as a drama major. But he chose to drop out in his freshman year.
At the time, he was already in six out of seven major productions. However, he claimed to not have learned much in acting and wanted more out of it.
One Step at a Time
When Gerald McRaney failed an audition, he went on to work in the Louisiana oil fields and on offshore rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. But his dreams of becoming an actor never died. He decided to pursue acting a year later.
In 1967, he went to New Orleans and was hired as an assistant stage manager, making $125 per week. He continued working with the company for four years and was even cast in a few productions.
McRaney then moved to Hollywood, and worked as a cab driver to support himself and pay for acting classes.
In 1969, he played a role in the low budget slasher film, Night of Bloody Horror. That year, McRaney got his first TV role in an episode of Night Gallery, after which he began getting more and more roles.
McRaney starred in The Incredible Hulk, Where the Ladies Go, and Women in White, cementing his place in the vast industry.

Gerald McRaney shot to fame with his role on the TV series, Simon & Simon, which ran from 1981 to 1989. He played Rick Simon on the show and became a household name.
In an interview, McRaney said about his Simon & Simon role, “I was lucky. For the last four or five years, I had been in the position where I didn’t have to take a pilot. I took this one because the script and the people were terrific. It never frightened me. As we were doing the pilot, I could tell that it was working.”
It definitely did! The CBS show is still enjoyed today for its comic timing and intrigue.
McRaney then went on to appear in many shows like One Tree Hill and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. He also appeared in movies like A Holiday Romance and The A-Team.
