While Christie Brinkley may still retain her youthful looks, she is still the mother of three grown-up children: Alexa Ray, 29; Jack, 20; and 17-year-old Sailor. Having successfully raised three kids through several marriages including one with reports of abuse, the supermodel has some seriously sound advice for all parents.
The 61-year-old shared a photo to Instagram. It is a seemingly ordinary image of a throng of seagulls by the beach, but the caption that Brinkley added to it gave the image a whole new perspective. She wrote, “There are two gifts we should give our children, one is roots and the other is wings.”
Of the over a thousand comments on Brinkley’s post, many came from parents who agreed with the star and lamented about having to one day see their kids leave—as one user very appropriately commented, “So true @christiebrinkley but watching them fly can be bittersweet,” along with a heart emoticon.
This post came only an hour after the former face of CoverGirl shared the news that her eldest, Alexa Ray Joel, will be performing the national anthem on October 9, before the inaugural game of the New York Islanders in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Brinkley wrote with the photo, “What so proudly this Mom hails.”
One can only assume that it was this good news that led Brinkley to reflect on her seemingly well-made parenting choices, and to share a little of her experience with her fans.
Alexa Ray Joel is Brinkley’s only child with her second husband, singer Billy Joel. While she may be the oldest, Brinkley seems to have a rock solid relationship with all three of her children, and often shares photos of them on her social media pages—she must be doing something right!
