One of the downsides of a big age gap in marriage is that you run the risk of the older spouse aging much sooner than the younger partner—this is unfortunately what’s happening with Celine Dion, 47, and her 73-year-old husband, René Angélil. The Canadian singer has just revealed that her older husband is currently in the hospital “fighting very hard” in his life-threatening battle with throat cancer. This sad news comes just a couple months after Dion revealed that her much older husband is now unable to speak or eat without a feeding tube.
The famous age gap couple’s May-December marriage still seems to have a solid foundation, because despite fighting an unrelenting illness, René Angélil still has his wife’s best interests at heart. Celine Dion revealed that it was her husband who pushed her to get back on stage—she’s taken a leave of absence from her residency at Caesar’s Palace in Vegas to be with her husband, but left his bedside for one night to sing at a benefit gala in Vegas.
“He wants me to be here. He wants me strong, he wants me back, he wants to see me again. Before he goes, he wants me to make sure that…” she said in a recent interview with the Las Vegas Sun newspaper, understandably emotional at the prospect of losing her husband of 21 years. However, she added that the motivation behind their May-December marriage is to stay positive. “It’s hard, the reality is hard, but we have the ticket to live today. We’re not dead; we’re living. Today, we’re alive, and we’re going for it.”
Celine Dion will be recommencing her Vegas shows at the end of August 2015, hopefully as her husband continues on the road to recovery.
