Celine Dion, 45, has never been shy about discussing the difficulty she had conceiving kids with her much older husband, 71-year-old René Angélil. The celebrity couple has openly discussed the role of fertility treatments in their struggle to have kids—they’re now proud parents of a 12-year-old son and three-year-old twin boys.
Dion recently revealed that she had at least seven in-vitro fertilization procedures done, and wouldn’t have thought twice about doing more if it would help them conceive. “For the twins I did IVF six times one after the other,” she said. “I thought as long as my health permitted me and unless my doctor thought physically I couldn’t do it, then I would go on with the IVF until someone told me to stop.”
Even though her husband is 26 years older than she is, Dion may not be ready to give up on having more kids because she’s got her heart set on a daughter. But the timing has to be right. The celebrity couple already juggles three kids with a packed work schedule, but Dion says she’s happy with her work-life balance at the moment. “I can still be passionate about what I do and I love still very much to sing, but at the same time I just don’t want to have kids and not be taking care of them, so right now I feel like it’s a perfect balance.”
Many couples in May-December relationships struggle with having kids, especially when there’s a significant age difference. IVF and other fertility treatments offer a solution, but can be quite expensive for everyday folks. That’s why it’s so important to ensure that you’re both on the same page when it comes to kids. If you’re going to be in a long-term relationship or marriage with a much older man, you need to make sure you discuss what you both want. If neither of you are interested in kids, then you have nothing to worry about. But if you’re in a May-December relationship and hoping to have kids some day, keep in mind that it might just be a little harder. Always keep the line of communication open and discuss your options with your partner, whether it’s investing in fertility treatments or finding a surrogate. The point here is that nothing is impossible.
What do you think: Would you be willing to invest in expensive fertility treatments to have kids with your older man?
